Black Rain

Update 7

You're not exactly sure how you would go about finding hidden text. You don't have any lemon juice, or source of heat, or a blacklight. Regardless, you decide to keep the note in your purse for safekeeping.

The handwriting on the note doesn't look entirely unlike yours, but that doesn't particularly mean much in this instance. What, you kidnapped yourself? Regardless of how drunk you could have been, that's just unlikely.

The similarity in handwriting is a little disturbing, though.

You really hope that you didn't kidnap yourself.

The hinges on the door are, in fact, fastened with regular screws. You use your screwdriver to begin unscrewing the hinges from the wall.

It takes quite a while, considering how long the screws are, but you eventually manage to free the door (and yourself) from the concrete prison. The lock can't do much to stop you anymore.

In front of the door are a series of stairs leading briefly upwards, and a small metal grate at the bottom of the stairs to stop the rainwater from flooding the house. Past the stairs is more darkness.

The breeze from outside is lukewarm, almost uncomfortably cold but not quite. The outside world smells like grass and rainwater.

You should probably prepare before heading out. Just to be sure.

[X] Your kidnapper has left you all of the tools necessary to escape your prison. The rain is pitch black. They left a note saying the light will protect you. You may not be in Kansas anymore.

More things I can think to do, inspect safety box, find or make something to keep the weird rain off, look for keys, and try to find or remember more lore/what happened.

Also we should probably think about locking/jam the door behind us. if this world is not normal we should try to keep the "safe place"we know of that way, like for some reason we need to return. I get the felling that that there is a... physical something... that we may need to be wary of or just overthinking paranoia.

Update 8

As you have mentioned, you are already wearing your trusty trench coat and stylish hat. Both are somewhat waterproof. You have no particular need for more protection, though an umbrella would be the safest option. Unfortunately, you can't see any obvious umbrellas lying around.

Not possible. The kitchen knife is far too large and sharp to stick in your pocket. You would need to hold it in your hand, which would mean not being able to carry your lantern. And between the two, that one seems a bit more important. The X-Acto knife, while considerably smaller, would still cut up your precious trench coat.

And before you ask, no, you're not going to try to grasp multiple sharp objects at once. You'd prefer to keep your remaining hand intact if at all possible.

You feel that doing so would be very dangerous, but you understand the necessity of playing along with whatever twisted situation is happening here.

Verbiage aside, you take a single pill.

Neat.

...

...You might have to wait a bit for that to start taking effect.

You are getting very confused! Should you open the box or not?

You hand wavers as you slowly lower the handsaw down towards the lockbox. You imagine the box exploding and killing you instantly. You also imagine the box being full of flowers and a politely worded note from your mom explaining everything that's going on in a very reassuring manner.

By the time you stop thinking about it, you have already sawed open the box. Whoops.

Inside is a single prosthetic hand and a ring of keys.

One of the keys perfectly fits into the handcuff that is still tied to your wrist. Another fits into the door. The third fits into the padlock on the window.

In hindsight, you probably should have opened this box right away.

The prosthetic hand comfortably fits onto where your left hand once was, clicking into place on the rod. It is made of wood, and smells faintly of strawberries. While you can't move it naturally, you can maneuver the stiff fingers with your other hand, allowing you to hold things. Nice!

You sigh as a garbled string of text comes through the conveyance system. As stated in every status report, commands can only be ten words long. Otherwise they overflow into gobbledygook.

Your right eyelid twitches.

Conveyance system? What...

Your vision is getting blurry.

Your headache is getting worse.

You don't have enough time! You need to... You need to...

Your headache is getting worse.

The bandage over your right eye itches. You desperately want to take it off. You picture all of the fluid in your body pouring out of your empty eye socket. Something is wrong.

Your headache is getting worse.

Your headache is getting worse.

Update 9

You're not going to die. In fact, after that migraine stopped, you feel a lot better.

The lantern has gone out. You're not sure how or why. The room is pitch black, but you still hear the sound of the rain outside.

You're currently lying on the floor, clutching the right side of your face. You want to take the bandage off.

Please let yourself take the bandage off.

Please do not be afraid Conveyance will now resume.

ps read the help first guys

EDIT: oh um shit
[X] Lit the lantern, never allow it to go out.

Uh..
[X] remember home?
Last thought before death or adventure should be of home.

[X] Genuflect
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyway, I'm enjoying this so far. There hasn't really been anything to set it apart from other horror-genre text adventures, but it's good quality writing. The atmosphere and tone are consistent and are complimented nicely by the use of the interface. I particularly like the use of a font other than SV's default. It wouldn't be anything to note if this were a normal text adventure game, but on SV it subtly adds to the unsettling atmosphere because you're not used to seeing stories in Courier New.

All in all, I'm looking forward to more!

[x] Unlock the window padlock. Close the window.

I think we may as well head out? I don't think there is anything else in the room.

I really appreciate the feedback! This is the first time I've done something like this, but I'm personally enjoying the writing side of things as well. The narrative should be picking up the pace soon, so stay tuned. ;)

    [x] are we a robot

Update 10

"We?" There is no we. You are a single person with a single set of emotions and thoughts, and you are a little concerned that you would be thinking about yourself in a plural sense like that. You've definitely heard about people with multiple personality disorder, and a few different examples of people like that on the internet come to mind, but you yourself have never had that experience.

Also, you are not a robot. You can clearly feel your own humanly flesh under your trench coat. Also, the bloodied bandages that cover the stump of your left hand would indicate that you are absolutely not a robot.

You recall a horror game that you played a while ago that involved a person who thought they were a person but were in fact a robotic diving suit with a human consciousness inside of it, but you are pretty sure that if you were a robot you would have noticed by now.

This is all getting very existential and it's starting to make you uncomfortable, so you stop thinking about it.

Just to make sure though, you unbutton your trench coat and gently poke your own belly button.

Yup. That's a human.

This comes with the added benefit of inspecting yourself for any more strange injuries. You have quite a few bruises, as well as a scar across your abdomen that was definitely not there before.

You do remember home. You think about how pretty the fall leaves were in the forest near your house. You think about winding country roads just ten minutes away from the prim and proper downtown. You think about your school, your professor, your coworkers. You had a paper due in a few weeks. You doubt it matters now, but the feeling of leaving it undone still makes you uneasy. It's the principle of the matter.

You quietly resist the urge to cry, breathing in and out, slowly, in time with the rainfall on the roof. Eventually, the heartache passes.

It takes a bit of effort to take it off, since you're not sure how the bandage is tied around your head. When you eventually find the small metal clip holding everything together, you sigh with relief.

When the bandage is off of your head, and you give your right eye an experimental blink, you take a few moments to register what you're seeing.

You see... the room, in perfect detail. Everything around you is outlined, like somebody had painted over the darkness in hues of purple and gray. It's still dark in the room, but you can see regardless.

You put your hand over the right side of your face, and the real darkness returns.

You remove it, and you can see again.

After a few moments, your eyes adjust a bit better to your new eyesight.

At this point, you're just going to try and take everything in stride.

You slowly get down on one knee and pray in thanks for your new sight, clapping your hands together.

That's what genuflect means, right? You're honestly not quite sure. You wish you had Google right now.

Wait...

Your hands.

You flex the fingers on your left hand. Unlike the rest of the room, your hand is... for lack of a better term, it's more shadowy than everything else. The outline is vague, and the fingers appear to be pointed.

Using your right hand, you can feel that your left hand is made of regular human flesh. The wooden prosthesis from earlier is nowhere to be found... until you spot it under the workbench. You must have thrown it over there by accident while you were writhing around on the floor from a migraine.

You think there may be a reason that your body parts were removed, after all...

That's probably not going to happen. You're nowhere near crafty enough to construct a sheathe entirely out of duct tape, and there are no convenient bags nearby.

Making use of the key ring, you gently close the window.

While you're at it, you also unlock the door and screw its hinges back into the wall so that it's fully functional. Your seemingly returned left hand is very useful in this regard.

With your new sight, you can easily locate the lantern that went out. It looks like the battery just popped out.

Picking up the lantern with your left hand, you pop the battery back in with your right. Having two hands is really nice for doing things.

Immediately, the room is illuminated, and the lantern clatters to the floor. Your left hand is a stump once again, and your eyesight is back to normal.

Oh.

[X] In darkness, we are whole. In light, we are not.

[X] Use duct tape to make the lantern shine one direction.

Unless an aspiring PI isn't 'crafty' enough to figure out how to wrap 75% of a lantern in duct tape to direct the light, this should allow Sarah to have both illumination and two hands. I'm wary of having her rely solely on her shadow sight, what with the warning from the note and all.

EDIT: Huh, just noticed two things.

1) Instead of 'Update 10', the title of this post is 'Updta'.
2) There's no status screen/command terminal.

@MariBari should we not be voting yet?
