Scars of Camelot (Fate/Magic the Gathering)

The King's Lost Knight
"Aye."

"Aye."

"Aye."

The various voices that called out were not surprising. Dragon slaying was called one of the highest callings of knighthood. A heroic act that was the pinnacle of knightly virtues, you would even get a fair damsel at the end, or so they said.

I'd been there before. Unfortunately, Lancelot took all the fun. I wasn't particularly eager for a repeat.

"Aye." Lamorak's voice rang out from beside me. I just glanced at him.

"You do know Lancelot will hog all the fun, and what he doesn't, Bors will."

"Gotta be in it to win it." He retorted playfully. "Not interested?"

"The king will be more fun." I answered bluntly. "More things to slice up. I've had my fill of house sized monsters for now anyway."

"I suppose you would have." He noted to himself. "I thought you hated Lothian though."

"It's not my home. That doesn't mean I'm not obligated to go defend it." I grumbled. "The worst part is being anywhere near mother, really."

"I doubt she will be a problem with the king right there."

"That's not the point." I just didn't want to deal with her right now. I nudged Lamorak's shoulder forward. "Well go on, guts and glory."

"Yeah, yeah. Take care, Mordred."

Take care, that was a new one. I just rolled my eyes. Now he was just being Gawain.

My eyes steadily travelled the room. Some of the nobles had begun to mingle, the knights were excitedly working out who was going to be a vainglorious hero, and the king was just staring at the map, as if something great weighed down on his mind.

Yet there was one person who seemed to be trying to make himself small in the corner. This might be the only chance I ever actually get, too. So I put a childhood of being the littlest to use and darted my way towards the side of the room.

"You know, never thought I'd actually get to talk with the other lucky number thirteen." My voice was somewhere between sarcastic and awed. Tristain was not exactly a small figure. Of all of Arthur's knights, only Lancelot was perhaps more famous. But then, Tristain was not a knight of the round table anymore. He was the one who decided to walk out.

"The other? Oh, then you replaced me." Traistain sounded surprised for only a moment, his eyes steadily studying my helmet. "Oh… oh my..." He seemed to do a double take for just a moment. I felt my eyes narrow.

"Excuse me?"

"Sorry, you just have the same face."

"You're kidding me. You can see through my helmet?"

"Is it supposed to be a secret? I won't tell." He glanced away from me, his eyes steadily examining the room, almost lazily really. "People watching." He explained. "Fun, sometimes, but this isn't a very interesting crowd."

"I suppose not. Kings and knights become predictable." I mused. Tristain shook his head.

"It's not that. I know these faces. A few are new, sure, but not enough to outweigh what I've already seen." He answered. "Some haven't changed at all, some have. Most are just hostile. The room is colder then it has ever been."

"Colder?"

"Yes. The king does not understand people." He muttered. "But I suppose you disagree with that."

"..." I didn't immediately answer. I could defend the king, but really, Tristain had already left Camelot. This was probably a part of the difference of opinion that led to that. "If you say."

"If I say. That's an unusual response." He muttered. "Tell me, how were you knighted, sir… uh..."

"Mordred." I finished for him. "I walked in, demanded a sword and beat up half the table."

"I see." Tristain looked at me again, then looked away. "I suppose for someone like you, that wouldn't be hard." I could see the side of his lip twitching. "Did Gawain pull his punches?"

"No, I threw him out the window." I retorted drily.

"Pity I wasn't there. Sounds like it was amusing, at least." He mused, shaking his head. "Just be careful. His Highness won't understand when he finally looks at you."

"What do you mean?"

"You'll work it out. I promised not to lure any of his men away." Tristain answered. "You don't wish to go dragon slaying?"

"Lancelot stole the glory last time. Besides, I've had my fill of fighting things the size of houses." I answered. Tristain just nodded.

"He does that. He doesn't even realise he's doing it." He answered. "It's the curse of someone whose ability to fight is so far beyond what he actually knows."

I could only agree with that. Lancelot was an amazing warrior, one who probably didn't realise just how good he actually is.

The meeting seemed to grind on in eternal tedium. Pledges were made and the king gave orders, yet at the end of it all, we numbered only twelve.

Eleven of us of the Knights of the Round Table, and one member who had once belonged to our group. The kings and nobles and even many knights had simply retired for dinner. Thankfully, my mother was amongst those who left.

No, saying we numbered twelve was not quite true. Merlin was here too.

"What a mess." Gareth spoke up. "Dozens of pledges and we raised barely two thousand men between them." My sister sounded strained, her hands rubbing her temples.

"It will have to be enough." Arthur declared. "If you have something to say Tristain, now would be the time."

"No, nothing." Tristain's voice seemed smooth, yet quite tired. "You seem to have it all well in hand."

"That's a change from your previous position." Kay's voice was almost accusing, yet Gawain simply held up a hand.

"This is not a time for recriminations." He stated. "I think we did enough of that already." He looked almost guiltily at me. "You might imagine we've had this discussion before."

"Yes, discussion." Tristain rolled his eyes at the claim. "Don't worry about it, Gawain."

"Ahem." Several people looked like they were about to speak, but Percival's voice drew everyone's attention to him. "To business. You say you have no memory, Mordred?"

"Not of the fight." I admitted. "I remember the picts, but then it gets blurry."

"Some sort of sorcery?" Kay asked, though Merlin simply shook his head.

"More likely just a nasty bop on the head." He stated. "I can't see anything particularly wrong with Mordred." He looked like he had something he wanted to add, but refrained regardless. "Arthur, someone will have to remain in the capital."

"I will." Really, Merlin and Gawain were being polite. We all knew already who would be attending to the state while Arthur was abroad. "Kay, you mind dealing with the numbers."

"Not a problem at all. I've gallivanted enough for the month." The knight nicknamed the fire giant seemed perfectly content to stay and relax. Arthur just nodded, his brow furrowed.

"Lancelot, Gaheris, Percival, Palamedes and Bors have all volunteered for the hunt." He muttered. "Mordred, Gareth, Bedivere, can I trouble you to accompany me?"

"Yes, your highness." We all answered as one, without a single question. Arthur just nodded, his gave going to Gawain and Kay.

"Get the others up to speed if you would, and if you see or hear of Galahad, do send him our way. He would be of great assistance, but I fear his quest may take priority." Sometimes, I had to wonder if the kings voice was sarcastic or merely tired. "You may retire if you wish. Mordred, given the situation, I will lend you a sword."

"Thank you, your highness." I nodded, bowing.

"Is there anything else?"

Throwing Gawain out a window sounds like a fun time. We should do it again sometime.

Mmm, questions questions questions... none come to mind, moving on.

Did seem like he had something to say earlier. Don't think it's the sameface thing, I'd bet he already knows that. Something about the memory loss then?

Oh fun times. Next.

Getting the old armor into face hiding shape. Boring, but kinda useful? I dunno.

Morgan and Morgause are two personalities owned by the same person. Basically taking something Kay said in Garden of Avalon and running all the way to the bank with it.
Technically, according to Fate wikia, the other personality of Morgan was Vivian, not Morgause. If I recall it right, Morgause should have died not long after Morgan freeload at her place. Some of the books says it's because of illness, others because of accidents or Morgan plotting or she just got exiled after some plot of hers was revealed. Depends on the source, really.

Still, if you're running for an original take on King Arthur, who the hell am I to argue? At this point, so many people have played around with it that it's probably one of the world's oldest bandwagon.

You mean the worlds most prolific fanfiction. :V

Who is Gareth actually?
The children of King Lot and Morgause (or depending on your source, Anna/Morgan/yadda yadda it varies a lot) are Agravaine, Gawain, Gaheris, Gareth and sometimes Mordred. Gareth is one of Gawain's younger siblings. In the nasuverse she's a girl, and probably the only member of the round table who isn't male who also isn't hiding it.

Im wondering if Mordred nearly planeswalked (as this a MtG crossover) and is trying to tell her. Mordred IS the mc of our quest

Practicality Ho!

Ooh, neat, he didn't peace out. And he can see through it. Fascinating. I imagine he has some sort of aptitude for seeing through illusions, though again, I am hardly familiar with Arthurian legend.
"It's not that. I know these faces. A few are new, sure, but not enough to outweigh what I've already seen." He answered. "Some haven't changed at all, some have. Most are just hostile. The room is colder then it has ever been."

Looks like Mordred is noticing it too. Judging from that, I think it's safe to say that the Battle of Camlann is going to happen sooner rather than later. Although, of course, that depends on both your definition of soon, and on whether our actions will divert that from happening. But it's one of those things that feels like it's practically guaranteed to happen in some form.
"Mordred." I finished for him. "I walked in, demanded a sword and beat up half the table."

Pfft. Also, daddy issues incoming. I don't think we're going to be able to prevent the alienation from happening, or fix it before the Battle of Camlann, sadly. There's probably some way, but it doesn't seem at all plausible with the temperaments and personalities involved.
"Lancelot stole the glory last time. Besides, I've had my fill of fighting things the size of houses." I answered. Tristain just nodded.

He probably plays Bastion. :V

Show of hands, who thinks that Kay will be more appreciated than Arthur?

Hmm, so we'll have a sword, if a borrowed one for the near future.
[ ] Ask a question?

Tristain already said that he'd leave it to us to figure out, so that's not an option. Granted, I'm not sure it would be worth asking even if he would answer.

There's no purpose in asking about basic things, such as what makes up the enemy's forces, as we probably know that IC. However, we could possibly ask what the intended plan of attack is at the moment. I don't imagine that there's much of one, though, as...ugh, I don't know how to put it into words. In this age, with the more primitive lines of communication, any plans made at this stage could possibly be faulty. But my intuition could be far off the mark, and I honestly don't know much of anything in regards to warfare, much less medieval warfare. Other than that, I feel as though there's *something* we should ask about, but I can't figure out what.

So, I'm going to ask the DM. Hadou, does Mordred know what sort of planning goes into a battle in this situation? There's undoubtedly a sort of "planning", but I'm not sure you can call things like "don't freak out when attacked" and "don't run your horse into other horses" "planning" so much as "you were supposed to learn this when you were training for this job".

The last option strikes me as Gareth sort of darkly jabbing Mordred, and like it could go several different ways, which makes me ambivalent towards it. Third option is simple and safe, and definitely seems like the most boring, but it needs to be done at some point. We'll hardly get a new sword forged before we go a-marching, but it should be finished by the time we're back. Second option seems like introspection, and possibly like it will force a scene with Morgan in the future, rather than it just being highly likely. And the first option could go one of many, many, many different ways. It's always a gamble with that old man. But it could be enlightening, and it calls to me.

[X] Merlin's voice rang out. "Mordred, if you have a moment."

Maybe the former, I see no reason for the latter. More likely this is just Phyrexia, though.
no powerstones, brothers war, or Thran Empre since Phyrexia had vastly different worlds and Magic which breaks magecrafts rule of sticking to science as they used magecraft to mass replicate Kaleidoscope without reaching the route which in Nasu-verse is impossible(im fairly sure) Makes me think this isn't phyrexia just some plane that happens to have magic and be called Earth

I'm not sure I understood this correctly. If I did:

Phyrexia can travel between planes (admittedly using weird and difficult methods), it's not a plane itself. (though places it takes over are also called phyrexia...)

Also, the kaliedoscope isn't so much planeswalking as it is...ah..."playing schrodinger's cat with alternate timelines", as I remember someone describing it. At least as best we can tell.

EDIT: though Hadou could change that here.

Dude look at the title

Dude look at the title
Makes me hink more of Mirrodin as that is the set involving phyrexian dragged by Kharn to his Artificial plane rather then phyrexia, as Kharns core was a Phyrexian powerstone contaminated by the oil of Yagwamoth which contained the templates of phyrexian style machineary/unlife whic contaminated all of mirrodin into the plane of new Phyrexia
who moved the Thran people to old/Original Phyrexia and then were trying to invade via Rath to reclaim Dominaria after the girl who rejected Yagwamoth locked the Phyrexians out of the old entrance by disabling the portal.
And the title could simply be a reference to the Fellowship of the table round splintering and the wounds its leaving on the people of england or just a MtG refrence just as a sort of Wink/Nod to the other half of the quest

Edit A Phyrexian plane is a Plane which has been Merged with Phyrexia via Rath like when they invaded Dominaria though some devices and material like Flowstone(whic composes the entirety of Rath) would be able to merge it wasn't actually the same plane so much as a creation of Phyrexia which is also possible since Phyrexia is by its nature as an artificial plane rather than a natural one rather unstable which makes such things as interplaner travel/buggery easier.

I'm not sure what your trying to say, but the kaleidescope in Nasu is one of humanities five great mysteries to be solved before the Age of Wills. Not only can it be done by science, as per Gilgamesh's words, humans will have to work it out before they can get off the planet.

Also, the kaliedoscope isn't so much planeswalking as it is...ah..."playing schrodinger's cat with alternate timelines", as I remember someone describing it. At least as best we can tell.
Sort of. How the kaleidescope really works is not really relevant, because Zeltretch will not be appearing.

I was saying that this can't be Phyrexia and then in another post i was talking about how the title could just be a nod to Scars of Mirrodin and how New phyrexia isnt really Phyrexia
since Phyrexia had planeshifting capabilities albeit convoluted and complex as hell

Original Phyrexia didn't have planeshifting capabilities on its own, it just had an original-flavour planeswalker (you know, the ones who were basically gods) on its side.

Mirrodin Phyrexia is Phyrexia.
