Fort Core [Dungeon builder/core][Narrative driven]

[X] Enterprising urban botanist

'pokes head in'
Well, finally caught up with a bunch of things, which meant I managed to start reading this thread... and finish it. Not particularly long yet, but hey! Not many other Dungeon Core Quests yet! Also, this one promises to be hilarious!

And I'm rather happy with the vote that won. Only thing that I might change about it would have been the Wicker Longhouse for either High and Low or Let's Mix it Up! But that's still only a might have changed.

As for this vote... The botanist is the most interesting one to me... Especially as it suggests we could go with a plant themed Dungeon.

Edit: Oh, and because no one's asked so far for what the hint might be, and it's going to be important it seems...

As long as the vote doesn't get locked soon enough that people can't change their votes if they wished, would asking for the hint being used to clarify what sort of advantages and disadvantages the urban botanist would give us be something we could do? You guys okay with that?

Or would it be better to ask what sort of environment we're going to be located in once we 'spawn' or something along those lines? Going for clearer planning rather than making sure we pick a good choice here...

... Actually, it might be more important to know what the area we're going to be located is like, because being the botanist and spawning in a desert is... probably a difficulty start.

Guys? Anyone got a preference or clearer idea than me? (please someone respond! Please :p)
Ok, two things
one this clarification is ooc and thus costs nothing - seeing as this is narratively driven, low-crunch quest, with minimal preplanning, I feel comfortable telling you that none of the choices here are good nor bad. Mostly they are flavor and they all carry both maluses and bonuses in equal measure.
Two, finally someone willing to start a discussion over matters instead of simple bandwagoning. have a like and a Fortune Die

Oh, and since the debate time is up, and Umi-san's question was so nebulous, and the ooc clarification touched a bit on the advantages/disadvantages issue here is the starting environment answer.

If the initial style chosen had been ringworks you would have started in the vicinity of a body of water
If it had been palisade in the vicinity of a wooded area.
Since it is hillfort, it's hills and plains.
and if you had attempted combinations, it would have affected the enviros all the more.

Now we return to your regular scheduled (yeah right ) quest.
Sorry for the delay. All of these tables killed me. I must have been crazier than usual when I decided to use them. Luckily this should be the last time I have to do so many.

There are no words that could describe the sensation of being incarnated. One instant it was just her and the screens, and the infinite, claustrophobic void.
And then she WAS.

She was beaten ground and the ditch that had provided the earth for the short hardened earth embankment that was her rampart.
She was a rickety and drafty wicker longhouse and the blackened fire pit with few sorry-looking skinny green logs piled in front of it, that gave her an indescribable crackling sensation.
She was the deep and narrow hole into the hill she was situated upon, and the dozen feet of gathered artesian water of her well, that felt as it should weigh more than the rest of her new self combined.
She was the steep, narrow, low-ceilinged, tunneled incline near the lowest part of her walls that dug deeper into the hill and the small room of beaten earth with airwents digging up into her well shaft at the back, that seemed somehow ponderous.
She was the incongruous lone tree, over sixty feet tall, whose roots broke into her well, and the wicker nest woven into its boughs, flowing and moving and alive, as well as half a dozen tall rough boulders arranged into an outward pointing horseshoe formation beneath the leafy spread, and boy-oh-boy did those sones feel all kinds of fizzy.
She was a long mound of rock and earth, covered by grasses and weeds, with long narrow shelves of stone and wicker, smaller than even her cellar, and yet feeling deeper than her well.
She was a stack of relatively flat rocks, somehow stacked taller than two man's height, erected on the tallest promontory of her hill, that felt as nothing so much as an eye of an invisible storm.

Suffice to say, she was more than a bit overwhelmed.
"Whoo-o... I can feel everyth..." Unfortunately, her blissed-out revelation was suddenly broken by a whole deluge of different screens, accompanied by a cacophony of different sounds all played at the same time.

As those final ominous nasty red message screens (not even close to the nice cheery one she had first encountered in the void :sour:) /Emily started to hyperventilate in panic.
SHE. COULD. DIE!
No one said anything about dying, thank-you-very-much. She did not sign up for this. For that matter she did not sign up for anything! She was quite read for the trip to end. Unfortunately, she was darkly certain there would be no waking up from this particular nightmare.

After panicking for enough time for the sky to change from the grey of predawn to the rosy pinkness of the rising sun, she finally managed to calm and collect herself enough to at least begin thinking with any semblance of reason.
Gods how much she felt the need for some nice, calming, sweet smoke from her bong.
And with that thought she came crashing back into panic mode.
She was a Fort. She had no mouth, no nostrils, no digestive system, no bloodstream, no actual body parts required for the holy and ubiquitous experience of enjoying that sweet, sweet high that came from availing oneself with certain chemically derived or naturally occurring substances.
That thought made her curl herself into tiny little ball - until she dropped dead right into her core and experienced another screen
You withdrew into your core.
That snapped her back real quick.
With gritted teeth, and unusually steely bout of determination, she forced herself to concentrate on the most pressing issues right now. Like avoiding dying.
Luckily, now she knew exactly where her core was, and she remembered from that endless row of message screens that she had received a 'Move Core' skill so she could at least start on the most pressing problem.

Unfortunately it seemed that nothing in her new life was going to be easy, for as she exited her core, another white screen awaited her, this one with a message she was quite unhappy to see.

You withdrew out of your core
-5 Will
After a few minutes of fumbling, she finally managed to call her status screen back, and found to her dismay that her suspicions had born true for her Willpower shoved 95/100.
Damnation all, that was the resource stat responsible for actions. And she had just wasted a full 5% of it.
Pushing down another soul deep pang for a single wiff of Pot, she tried to use her 'Move Core' skill, and to pleasant surprise immediately intuited without the need to use it that would cot her another 5 Will to use. With a small mental prod she even intuited that it would cost her another 5 Will to learn more about any of her other common skills, but that examining the higher? stronger? rarer? skills would exact more cost. Some further mental gymnastics showed her that similar principles applied to the list of materials she 'owned'.

"Ok, let do this!" She cheered herself on, as she tried to deal with the mess she found herself in.

Voting time! please vote in plans

The well is closer to water and the earth which seems like a good choice while we're building up. And it might let us purify the water, or something.
Examine our abilities and some common (and thus cheap) items.

Actually, you do. It is right there on the status screen
And according to the red boxes, our mana regeneration is currently locked until we get sapients.

Where are you planning on keeping our character sheet?

Can we use materials like Earth, Stone and Clay to try to repair the fort, and speed up our healing?

Oups, that should have been sentient, not sapient. Thanks for pointing that up, Fixed now (along with a few other minor slips) Have a Fortune Die for that.
Where are you planning on keeping our character sheet?
Don't know quite yet. Originally intended to put it spoilered at the bottom of each turn, but I'm on a table burnout right now. Don't worry though, I'll figure something out by the next one.

Can we use materials like Earth, Stone, and Clay to try to repair the fort, and speed up our healing?
Now, that would be telling. But now that you've gotten a Fortune Die, why don't you give it a roll, there are no downsides to it. You just might get your answer. Otherwise, you might win a generic hint, a generic boon, or an opportunity to request a boon.

I think I'll roll my Fortune Die.
It would also be appreciated if you set up some repository of Fortune Die results.

Edit: Since I got an odd that should be a boon, since the number I got it was prime, that should be a choice. Can I use the boon to get a sentient minion? I have to ask because I don't know how powerful or limited boons are yet.

Boons CAN get pretty powerful, but that is beyond tricky business.
You only got Genesis soulseed because of Umi-san's use of a boon, and that thing is in my limited and humble opinion beyond awesome.
On the other hand, it was also a result of a monumentally big streak of luck - as in, it took three rolls - one to determine which of the three missed bonuses should the boon apply to; second one to determine if what kind of reward hidden in the midden would award (artefact, critter, material, skill, stat bonus or beneficial event); and the final one to determine which of 9 powerful artefacts would be awarded. In my opinion, there could only have been two overall better results for the players. And even that can be debatable.
the two things I considered better than the soulseed:
1) You could have gotten something like sys assistant lite (aka dungeon sprite),
2)You could have started game with doppelgänger minion

So, here is the thing - you can ask for sophont minion. But you might not get it - chances are stacked against it. But, on the other hand, boons are just that - boons. So, whatever happens, would be, in some way be beneficial. Might not be much, but it would not be bad.

So, do you want to try?

I mean I was only looking to get a sentient minion to unlock the mana regen, but if I can have the chance for a sophont minion to unlock the [Buildings] menu (you misspelled it as meny), then I'd like a choice conditional upon information that I do not know. If there's a better chance to get a sapient minion, than a sophont minion, then I want to choose the sapient minion, otherwise I would like to go for the sophont minion.
I hope I'm not overreaching by stating my decision like this.

@yannoshka Will we immediately go to sleep etc. and thus recover all our will after this turn, or is there a chance we may need to use some before being able to regenerate it?

Yeah, you got all the helpful info out of me you'll get.
As I stated in the first post when I first explained Fortune Die, I'm not giving out anything that is not earned. I'm not here to hold anyone's hands.
You've got a boon, you choose how to use it. If it works out for you - good for you. If it doesn't work out as well as you hoped, that's too bad. It will still turn out to have been useful since it is a Boon.

Again, not telling.
You want to know, track down @Pyro Hawk - they've got an unused Fortune Die. Or try to earn one yourself.

Ok then, I use my boon to try to get a sentient minion.

Okay, before I forget I earned it... Going to roll my fortune die (See top post of this page for where I earned it)...

Edit: 65, Damn that is definitely not a Prime, though it is odd. Looks like you have to determine a boon to give us @yannoshka ...

Okay, now that that's dealt with... Time to discuss. Probably.

Edit2: Nope, just took a look now that I'm not on my phone and things are currently a bit too confusing for me...

That said QM? Once you're over your table-burn-out... Yeah, I'd greatly appreciate seeing the character page. You don't actually need to post it at the start of the thread anymore due to the 'new'ish threadmark categories. Just post it where ever labelled as 'Character SHeet' in the Informational threadmark category, and we'll be able to easily find it. Or at least, we should be able to...

Oh, and the map's broken for me in the update. Any chance you could fix that or something?

Edit3: 'thumps head on wall' I completely forgot to vote...
[X] Plan Learn Stuff & Hide In A Hole

Decent plan that get's us aware of all the small things we'll need to know, though nothing too expensive and not all the small things.
On the other hand, it doesn't try to have us do a bunch of things before we know what we're doing. That would probably cause... 'issues'.

Ok, just checked, and while the map is fine on my desktop, it is broken on laptop. So I'll try a different image host, see if that does anything.
Is that better?
I can see the map now on both my desktop and my laptop. Since it is kinda big, I don't know how it would affect phones.

Image is working fine now. Just checked on my phone and that's working fine as well, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't originally.

Two questions left then I guess...
1. For the Fortune Die rolls, does a roll of 1 count as a Prime Number or not? I know that 1 get's... weird when you try to work out Prime numbers and just wanted to get your opinion now before anyone needed it.
2. Can you reveal what my QM-chosen boon gives now, or do QM-chosen rewards from Fortune Dice always appear in the next turn update? By which I mean, Non-Prime Odd numbers and unevenly divisible by 10 even numbers,

Thanks.

1 and 2 don't count as either odd or even number rolls but have their own special purpose.

Boon effects always appear in the next update.
You've already had the opportunity to encounter generic hints. they happened in both main updates

yep, no major updates today, But I will not leave you hanging.

So, @chrisleech -es targeted boon came up to
Sentient - yes
Sapient - no
Numbers - 4
Collective HP - 14
Type - Plant
Description - small
Danger rating - J (pretty harmless, but can inflict damage)

So, I decided to chain combo @Pyro Hawk -s generic boon, to allow you to discuss and propose what kinda minions you are going to get.
This is not vote because I don't want it to interfere with the main resolution. If sufficient number of ideas get entered, I might make an offsite pool to decide the winner.

Ok let's see plant monsters. Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, mushrooms(both deadly spore and walking variety), razor grass, dryads, treants. Not sure what else, just threw out plant monster ideas. I guess we could always pull from the grass type Pokemon list though.

Last edited:
fair warning, dryads and treants fall under sapient by definition, and most pokemon inspired creatures I can think of would have higher danger rating.
Also, going the creative route is much more likely to get rewarded by me.

Heck, might as well give you a prompt: make something riffing on Emily's nature as a stoner and "enterprising urban botanist" and You are definitely getting a reward.
