    If you mean the meaning that refers to the people subjugated by the late Ottoman Empire to pay taxes and other tithes.. most don't remember it beyond the exams for history classes in school. Or if they are a history/ old literature buff.

    Although I remembered the word, even I had to look up the meaning now. It's just fallen out of use.. and modern relevance.

    More like the people subjugated by the Ottoman Empire to pay taxes and tithes in general. It is modernly relevant when talking about the various systems of slavery that still exist in today's world for comparison, but most people don't deal with those. Is at least the blood tithe still remembered? Cause the Devshirme is still remembered in Serbia if the rest of the systems of taxes and tithes are left forgotten.
