• I have a question, why you get banned from 'Attempting to Fulfill the Plan MNKh Edition' thread here ?

Because I partially lost my temper at someone over their persistent advocacy for nuclear brinksmanship, and their denial that nuclear war with genocide-level consequences is a danger associated with such brinksmanship. I would prefer not to go into more detail on my profile, as opposed to PMs.
So, if you don't mind me asking, where is your avatar from?

I see. Thank you for your time.
Simon you are aware Son of Death is? Cause I kind of expected you to show up in that quest and just now was surprised when you simply weren't there for 20 pages. Am I wrong? Is it not a quest you are interested in?
I just wanted to say that I find your comments in quests to be really interesting and fun to read. Like right now you just wrote two really good and informative posts in the GDI and Dominion quests and I wanted to say they were fun to read. And that I also agree with your premises in both of them.
Sorry about the weirdly timed like from about two months ago.
I had legitimately forgotten about that; I put it off for a week because I was finishing an exam period, and it slipped my mind completely.
Thanks for writing it nonetheless though. History's always worth learning; even the unpleasant bits.

Statistically, if you post enough, and if anyone likes what you say, some fraction of your likes will come from old posts. It really, really isn't something you should feel apologetic about.

[grunts in respectful acknowledgment and appreciation of an honorable and solid thinker, who may occasionally feel bad for silly reasons :p]
I apologize for getting worked up over that article; it presented a very effective throughline with its (apparently fabricated) presentation of the novel. I'm also a bit touchy/suspicious about Heinlein in general due to a family member who's got light-libertarian tendencies being a huge Heinlein fan and recommending the novel Starship Troopers to me at every opportunity.

Starship Troopers works when understood as the story of a Poor Bloody Infantryman who doesn't question the society he grew up in. A lot of people really don't, even in nastier societies than Heinlein's Terran Federation. There's something to the book in that role, as entering the head of someone who lacks the political hyperconsciousness and extreme intellectual aspiration we tend to take for granted here.

The politics slung at Rico in a few spots? A mess. But at that, I feel it merits being engaged directly. Not dismissed over someone's skim of the book to make a strawman version of it. Sometimes, if someone is wrong, it's worth hearing a good faith presentation of their own argument, and I think this is one of those times. There's other things in the corpus of Heinlein work I wouldn't say that of, mind you.

    That didn't happen.
And if it did, it wasn't that bad.
And if it was, that's not a big deal.
And if it is, that's not my fault.
And if it was, I didn't mean it.
And if I did, you deserved it.
I do not think further discussion (you know where and with whom) is warranted in any shape or form.

You are extremely patient with person who can't separate attack on his arguments from attack on himself. Or finds that this lack of separation convenient shelter.

Well thank you, but yeah, that's the basic dynamic at work here.

I was perhaps overly optimistic about "is he narcissistic or just clueless," but yeah. Narcissism.
I wish to compliment the quality of your arguments. Your mere presence in a thread raises the quality of discourse seven fold.
Hello Simon, How are you? I really like your posts especially when you do analysis and arguments. At least to me, you are very convincing and nuanced with your arguments.

I appreciate the fact that whenever I see your arguments (No matter the topic) you are quite respectful and with a minimum of condescension. I may not know the whole story but from I have gathered so far reading your arguments, you sound quite reasonable. I mean, no flaming insults, just analysis and argument.
I may not agree with your political beliefs (at least, as far as I understand them), but you have my sincerest goddamn sympathies for what I'm seeing in the thread about the riots. It's the posting version of watching someone trying to extricate a limb from a beartrap. Just... just not a good scene.

My main political belief is that whatever else I believe, I'll be damned if I let doctrines blind me to, well, facts.

That doesn't mean I get everything right; I'm not a world-class expert on being right about things.

Often it means I stubbornly insist on nuances when everyone is enjoying the Wine of Righteous Anger.

But it's a place I'm comfortable in, even if it's kind of dumb in practice.
Thanks for the link to the Rules for Ruling vid. I think once work has calmed down again - so, probably post-Corona - I have a new book in the queue.

    Thanks.

And I'm doing a reread of select portions, usually inspired by my clicking on links to other people's reacts to my own posts from '16 and '17.
I just want you to know that I think you are doing an excellent job in the GND thread. You have provided some very reasonable arguments and the absolute refusal to engage with them by almost everyone in the thread has been absolutely ridiculous.
Seems like you spend most of your time here doing actual debate stuff, but if you're ever in the mood for a forum with a light hearted, convivial atmosphere you might wish to check out Frozen in Carbonite.
Which cartoon is your avatar from? I can hear his dang lisp in my head, I've definitely SEEN it, but for the life of me I can't remember the show.
