If you want to see the status of a story that has laid dormant for multiple months you PM the author. Particularly if you have nothing constructive to add.
If you want to do 'shameless advertisement' as you put it, have the common decency to not hijack another person's story thread to do it. Take it to the appropriate thread instead.
