Breckenridge awoke to the sound of a woman screaming. She sat up, thinking it might have been some domestic disturbance. The Poole family did love to argue at odd hours of the night. She was surprised to see light streaming in through her curtains, it certainly didn't feel like it was morning, and judging from the light it looked to be nearly noon. She looked at her alarm clock
11:47 PM
It was night. What the heck was going on? Gwen rushed to her window. It wasn't the sun out there, indeed even the stars had vanished.
The entire night sky had been replaced by a brilliant golden light, dimmer than the sun, but stretching as far as Gwen could see.
Alarmed and confused beyond all measure, she rushed outside. The light wasn't just covering the sky, in the distance she could see the false sunlight slopping down until it met the ocean. Near as she could tell it was completely encircling the entire island and nearby ocean.
She was horrified and confused, her mind struggling to make sense of the situation. Nothing she'd seen or heard of could explain what was happening right now.
A few other people were outside as well, some were just simply looking up and gawking at the sight but some of the others were terrified, terrified to the point of outright panic. One woman was running around the street screaming bloody murder about the rapture. Which was setting everyone within ear shot on edge.
Gwen returned inside, she reached for her phone, maybe someone she knew on the mainland could explain what was going on, what this looked like from the outside.
Her phone didn't have a signal, no matter where she moved it.
She turned on her TV, hoping the news might provide some insight. Just static...on every single channel. From ABC to the Food Network.
Starting to seriously worry, she reached for her laptop. Her router was working fine but she had no access to any website.
Finally she went for her radio, nothing but static from the mainland stations. The Ashurst stations were both operating normally, but at this time of night they were probably just automated, whoever was at the station was probably either asleep or watching the light show.
They were cut off, completely and utterly cut off from the mainland. That sort of things happened from time to time sure, in a really nasty storm. This was just lights, how could lights, even ones as unnatural as what she was seeing, cut the island off so completely?
Gwen could hear panic outside, it was small though. Most people were more than likely still asleep. But as the night dragged on more and more people were probably going to wake up, either from the light show or the screams. And once they realized that not only was the sky gone, but so was any contact with anything off the island, there would be a panic. The police could handle it. Assuming everyone was awake and they hadn't started to panic yet.
Maybe she should go to the police station, at least coordinate with Sheriff Jessica. A Curfew might prevent a riot, but it would almost certainly freak people out. Then again if they just increased patrols it might convince people this wasn't something worth panicking over...yet.
Then again she could go to the Radio Station, if any luck Chloe was on shift tonight. Chloe would let her in. It was further away though, by the time she got there the police might have already decided on a course of action. But from there Gwen could do her best to try to keep things calm, urge the people to remain calm and indoors until this...event was over and it would also give her a chance to get into contact with any boats that been close to the Island when this light appeared. If there were close to where this thing 'ended' for lack of a better term, they might be able to tell her more about just what the hell was going on.
Breckenridge got in her beat up old Chevy and decided to set off towards the
