In preparation for a modified jumpchain fic I'm working on (Jumper!Seylerius is getting forced on the trip), I'm investigating the (near-)instantaneous travel mechanisms of different settings, their travel interdiction methods, and interactions between these. I'm curious about nearly any setting, but in particular I'm interested in the interaction between the various forms of Wormverse travel and the various forms of HPverse travel. Also, the jumper is going through the Portal jump before either of those, so we're definitely Thinking with Portals, too.

Wormverse:
  • Doormaker
  • Butcher's explosive teleportation (possibly similar to phoenix travel?)
  • Trickster's swap-teleport
  • Arianna/Eric from @TanaNari's Amelia
  • Labrynth + Flechette holepunch
  • Black Kaze (related to ninja-type settings' Flash Step class of moves?)
  • Burnscar (probably similar to phoenix travel?)
  • Oni Lee (lossy duplication?)
  • Strider (Not much info available)
HPverse:
  • Apparation
  • Anti-apparation jinx (or wards, if we go with the common fanon inclusion)
  • Portkeys
  • Phoenix travel
  • Floo network (doubt it could be brought into Wormverse, but worth discussing anyway)
I'm interested in breaking down as many different teleportation and portal mechanisms as possible. If the setting you suggest has a jumpchain written for it, I might add it to the path I'm working on (especially if canon's in need of fixing, and the process of doing so has a decent chance of breaking the jumper's mind a little bit).

Dune has Holtzman effects which enable three different technologies. Two of them are shields and instantaneous travel of Heighliners across the universe. Sometimes these are depicted as wormholes.

Star Trek:
* transporters - destructive scan and reconstruction of people
* Q teleportation
* Gomtuu throws two ships 3.8 billion kilometers in about 20 seconds
* the Traveler moves the Enterprise intergalactic distances
* unstable wormhole to the beta quadrant, stable wormhole maintained by the Prophets to the delta quadrant
* Borg transwarp conduits, slipstream technology in Voyager

Commonwealth Saga by Peter Hamilton
* they use wormhole generators and send trains through them
* the main character has a portable personal wormhole generator rated to go most places near an existing wormhole in the Commonwealth (probably not a physical limitation)

Stargate
* wormhole generators
* chains of wormhole generators working in relays to achieve intergalactic travel
* the Ascended can travel up and down from a higher plane of existence
* Asgard teleporters
* Goauld teleportation rings
* hyperdrives capable of casual intergalactic travel

Green Lantern Corps power rings also generate wormholes. The same with Boomtubes in Marvel.

Doctor Who
* TARDIS - time machine, arrives at a destination before it left
* time ring - personal time travel device in armband form
* vortex manipulator owned by Jack Harkness - personal time travel device in wristband form
* Dalek void ship - travels outside and between universes
* the Cruciform
* the Bad Wolf - matter self-reassembly
* Eternals, can travel up and down from Eternity

The Infinite Assassin by Greg Egan
* the older antagonist, exists simultaneously in all timelines

But TV Tropes seems to have most of them.

The three mechanisms of external point to point transporters I've seen are:

* person is deconstructed and reconstructed traveling as mindless information (TOS)
* person is transformed into another form which is conscious for transit only to be reverse transformed at destination (TNG, stargate)
* person's body volume is mapped then a bubble wrapped around it which is shunted through an alternate dimension (a fanfic of stargate)

the last method was used by a writer of a personality type that worships matter and considers it holy and sacred. To them, you are your matter, your body is you, and tampering with it is a heretical abomination. 1000 identical copies of you are 1000 different persons since they have different matter. The idea of existing as information, as mind, is incomprehensible to them for all that they pay it lip service and say they understand.

The more "respect" the transportation mechanism pays to these oh so sensitive people's insanity and retardation, the more its potential is reduced
  • TOS transporters could easily produce thousands of flash clones of Captain Kirk in his prime, they just aren't used that way because one Captain Kirk is enough to save the Federation.
  • TNG transporters have been DRMed to hell and back and have to be jailbroken before they can produce flash clones.
  • The Asgard transporters in that one canon-breaking fic aren't capable of ever producing flash clones.
So, unused revolutionary potential, deliberately crippled potential, no potential. All to soothe the sensibilities of people who want stagnation and never ever have any revolutions.
