The year is 2320.

Earth is a scarred world, the result of wars and climate damage over centuries, and yet it lives on, and it has spread its reach among the stars. Under the blue, gold and white of the United Earth flag, colonies have spread across stars that a scant few hundred years ago seemed unreachably distant, and humanity's frontier grows ever further from its cradle. Throughout human space, corporations have grown, competed, conflicted with one another for the vast resources of the new frontier, as United Earth itself has fought to retain dominance over humanity.

As they expanded, humans eventually found that they were not alone. Out in the furthest reaches of the frontier, humanity vies for territory, resources and power with other alien powers, notably the nearby Andorian Empire. But most notable are not these, but the aliens living inside humanity's own borders

Close, very close, to humanity's homeworld, lie the systems of a race they call the Lacertoj. A young, scaly reptiloid species, the Lacertoj had only colonized a few scant systems before they were overrun in the initial wave of human expansion after the Third World War and the advent of FTL, a couple hundred years ago. Their space is now a small enclave within humanity's core territory, their economy and defense dependent on Earth's.

And then... there is magic. Magic, which pervades human space, pushing against and breaking the very laws of reality in small ways every single day. Which is hidden from the public even as it affects so much of the world around them. The spektroj, creatures born of negative emotion, lurk throughout space, preying on people and ships, causing anomalies and disappearances and inexplicable events. The konatoj, mysterious creatures that seem to follow wherever humanity goes, invisible to most, seek out heroines to battle this menace. These are the mages, magical warriors that battle against the spektroj and protect the innocent.

In the midst of all of this, a space station floats among the asteroids of a star 40 light years from Sol. KomenCo Outpost 17, a mining and trading station home to several thousand people, orbits 285 G. Puppis and provides trade and resources to a large swathe of colonies in the distant frontier. In this busy port, a small creature wanders, the corridors, searching...

Welcome to Stargucas, a game of adventure and heroics by @Gadjo and myself. (Revised) charsheets are here, mechanics changes are here. Your characters will be brand new mages aboard the station when they're recruited. There'll be a few weeks time while we plan the game for you to create and finish your characters, and then this will finally begin!

Well, since @aeqnai indicated that she'd like setting questions to be put here:

What's the station like, physically? Is it fairly cramped like modern space stations or some kind of futuristic space habitat like an O'Neill Cylinder? Does it have like parks or other natural-ish areas? A simulated day/night cycle? Is there anything unusual about this station compared to others in the setting?

What's life on the station like? Is it anything like modern city life in real life? What about education, especially at the high school/university levels given the likely ages of our characters? Is university-level education even available on the station? Or perhaps society has changed so much from the present that these aren't even meaningful concepts anymore? Anything we should know about the station's politics and culture?

What's the tech level of the setting like? Interstellar travel obviously exists, but how fast and how affordable is it? Is it like travelling between cities in real life or something more difficult like maybe travelling to distant colonies during the Age of Sail? What about communication technology? Does everyone still have mobile phones or similar devices? Is there anything like the internet? Is there any difference between the technology available on this station and what's available nearer the core worlds?

Jesus Christ on a pogo stick it's taken me forever and a day to get back to this, between various IRL things, but rest assured I'm working on it. Anyhow, answers to the questions above, more or less unedited and subject to possible revision but accurate as best as I can do right now.

The Station is a large complex, easily dwarfing most skycrapers. A central facility processes ore and houses important systems, while a large ring rotates around the center. The ring serves as the station's living area and is constantly rotating to provide gravity to the inhabitants. The station's interior is spacious and resembles an office building or mall complex in aesthetic. A large arboretum serves as a public park and is located in the largest room in the ring, but otherwise the station is relatively free of nature aside the occasional potted plant. A mild day/night cycle is denoted by hallway lights being dimmed at certain hours. This station is one of the largest complexes this far from Earth, a result of its importance as the center of the system's extremely profitable mining operation and a waypoint on the trade routes leading to a quarter of Earth's frontier colonies. It was built about 20 years ago, replacing a much smaller facility that had been built when humanity first claimed the system.

The station is essentially a company town for KomenCo, the mining and trading conglomerate that built and runs it. Large amounts of trade run through it daily, to and from the frontier colonies and Sol. Education facilities exist on the ring, but are mostly barebones. A typical high school day might look like a bunch of kids in a spare station conference room, 'attending' a lecture from some professor in another solar system via holoprojector while a company educational official oversees them, basically a fancy skype call in all but name.
University doesn't leave one much options. There is a trade school- but it only focuses on skills one would use in the mining operations KomenCo oversees there. For higher education, most leave to attend a proper institution in the core worlds, such as the University of Mars.
The station is a melting pot- very capitalist. The middle class thrives here, and immigrants, travelers, and traders frequent this only port between Earth space and a solid quarter of their colonies. There isn't much of a social safety net here- the disaffected are shipped back to earth space in order to rid themselves of them, and the homeless don't last long before being run out of town on a shuttle.

Interstellar travel is something akin to getting a plane flight. It's expensive, but not prohibitively so. And it being a large trading port, it would certainly be possible to charter a flight off the station unofficially. There are no safety guarantees with that, though. Travel times may vary but are in the order of a few days to several weeks between most nearby destinations, while a journey to say, Earth would take a few months, and one to the other side of human space might be closer to half a year. The internet has spread alongside humanity, and communications are notably faster than travel-- a signal might take a few days to go the distance a ship would go in a month. Mobile technology is rampant, and recently implants that perform the function of a smart device and can be controlled by mental impulses have become popular. The station is one of the most prosperous human ports right now, and has some of the latest technology on offer in its stores.

One of these days, I will get into a Magical Burst game on here. However, that day is not today.
