Welcome to Sneeze Tries to Write, Episode 1: The Writening

You freeze. Slowly you look to the furry white creature resting on the table. What did it just say? You spend a moment processing it before you remember something more important. As you look to your right, it's as you thought; your friend Chiharu is in a similar state of disbelief, the color draining from her face rapidly. You throw a hand on her shoulder, hoping to comfort her as you address the furball.

"Kyubey, that..." You struggle to find the right words. "That's not funny!" Is all you can say. You don't want to believe what it just said was true. There's no way. Despite the looks of horror in you and your friends' faces, it stares back with those same empty eyes, its tail swishing passively.

"It is not a joke," it begins. Its voice feels like ice to you right now. "You asked me what witches are. Why would I lie to you?"

You feel the need to retch, but if this is making you so sick -

Chiharu is pale, she looks like she could faint at any moment. You clamp your arms around her in an awkward hug, hoping desperately to help her. She wraps her own arms around you, weakly gripping the clothes on your back as she starts to shake.

Shifting yourself until you face Kyubey again, tears start to form as you try to think of what to say. This doesn't make any sense. How is that possible? What does this mean for Chiharu? Why didn't he...

"Why wouldn't you tell her this...before!? Before she...!" Your words catch in your throat, interrupted by choked sob.

In response it cocks its head. It's so ugly, you think. Moments ago it was cute, but now...
Its response is curt, as always. "It's not as though I was hiding the fact. It is just something you did not ask until now."

Your mouth hangs open in shock. You've no idea how to respond to that.

Just as you're about to start openly crying, Chiharu stands up fiercely, breaking your hold on her. She doesn't miss a beat, marching over to Kyubey. She grabs him and, practically roaring, throws him out of an open window. You unmistakably hear the monster crash against some garbage cans outside.

You both sit in silence for a moment, both afraid to meet each others' eyes. You can't believe what you did. It was your fault. You asked him. Chiharu has been a magical girl for how long? And she never knew...she might never have known, but you...you're so stupid!

"Chiharu-! I'm...I'm so sorry-"

She cuts you off with a wild hug. You nearly fall over as most of her weight flies onto you in a desperate embrace. Chiharu starts crying openly into your shoulder, repeating over and over things like "I'm so stupid...I'm such a damn idiot..."

You raise your voice over her, struggling not to cry, yourself. "This isn't your fault, Chiharu...it's...that...it's Kyubey's fault. He...he tricked you. You didn't...you couldn't..." you can't keep it together anymore. You cry with Chiharu - you cry for her. For your best friend who just made a wish to help her family. This was just too cruel. It wasn't fair...!

...It wasn't fair. It's not fair that Chiharu has to go through this alone. You'll always be her friend, but how could you ever tell her it's going to be alright when you don't suffer even a fraction as much as her?

Your thoughts are brought to a halt as Chiharu yanks herself away, clamping her hands onto your shoulders. Her eyes, marred by tears, lock with your own.

"Emi!" She shouts.

"Wh-what!?" You're more than a little surprised. Chiharu has been sobbing uncontrollably, but she's pulled herself together somewhat. Her eyes are still full of sadness.

She sniffles loudly and continues, still crying a bit.

"Emi I'm so- I'm so sorry I ever...told you it was okay- to become a magical girl! If you had- had done it, I...I- I'm so sorry!" She hunches over, tears falling onto the floor, her grip still tightening on your shoulders.

Half in a panic, you throw your own hands up and embrace her.
"Chiharu, don't...don't say that! You haven't done anything, you-"

But Chiharu shoots up again, shouting once more, "Emi!"

"Y-yes!?" You can't help but be startled at the sudden ferocity...

"Emi...promise me!"

"...Huh?" You look back into her serious eyes, confused.

"Please, Emi! Promise me you won't become a magical girl!"

You stare at her for a moment. After hearing the truth, why would you want to? Well...the answer is obvious. But she's asked you not to...she's worried about you, even now.

"I..."

[] I won't, Chiharu...I promise!

[] I still want to help you, Chiharu! Please!

[] I...don't know what to say...

Awwwwwww shit!
Hey SV, you ready for a masterfully written, extensively thought out and well executed quest?
Me neither!

And thus, GonnaSneeze left the shitposting cave and ventured into the dangerous world of quest running. Yes, it's a PMMM quest. No, that's not very exciting. No, I wouldn't say I have any overly exciting ideas for it like catgirls or 3000 page hiveminds, but hey, it's PMMM...SV is all over that, right?

Either way, this is kind of an experimental thing; it IS my first rodeo after all, and it IS almost entirely on a whim. Even if this crashes hard, I'll have a better idea what this is like if I ever decide to make...well, a quest that's actually good.

Don't let that discourage anyone from participating, though. If you guys actually enjoy it and I can keep my interest up, this quest could still last a while. I can dream okay?

Some other notes:
- Consider this first post a prologue of sorts to the "story", if you can call it that. Our PC, Emi Yoshishige, is as you can tell, not contracted...yet.
- Combat mechanics: Lol, what combat mechanics?
- I'll try let Emi's personality be determined by input as much as possible, but really...it's not hard to guess what personality it will be with SV at the reins.
- Emi's got lives, the tally of which will be in the next post. If they run out...

Alright with that, have at it I guess. I've got essentially fuck all to do for about a week and a half, so I hope this takes.

"You've got to trust yourself. Be gentle with yourself. And listen to yourself.

You're the only person who can get you through this now.

You're the only one who can survive your story, the only one who can write your future."

-Characters-

Profile The well-meaning
A 14 year old girl. She was born and raised in a mid-sized town in the Osaka prefecture, and moved to Kasamino around a year and a half ago. She's never had many friends, but she managed to get herself into a group of friends at her new middle school. She and her friends are all 2nd years at their school. Emi is not a member of any clubs, but her grades are top notch.

Several years ago when her father was discovered to be unfaithful, her parents divorced. Emi now lives with her mother. After moving, she rarely sees or hears from her father.

Emi's relationship with her parents is poor. She resents her parents for splitting their family apart, and her mother especially for taking her away to Kasamino where she never sees either of her parents.

Other info
Height: 5'3" / ~159cm
Hair color/Eye color: Black/Orange
Magical status: Contracted. Wished to protect everyone.
Corruption capacity: 1300
Gem color: Orange

A double ended sword that can split into two swords. Each sword is connected by a seemingly endless length of chain.

Weapon Abilities

Fire!:
Powerfully launches one of the sword's ends. Its penetration power is superb, and for some reason it's really hard to pull out.

Get over here!: Shut up. Right, so if one of Emi's launched/thrown swords is lodged solidly into something, the chain's powerful reeling function can be used to either: Drag Emi toward the target, or drag it towards her. She can only pull targets that aren't too heavy.
Stop it!: Emi can create circular forcefields strong enough to stop heavy attacks. She can vary their size, but by default they are 5m in diameter. The bigger they are, the weaker their structure, and vice versa. Always costs 50.
+ Emi cannot move them once they've been created
+ On top of its normal disc shape, Emi can create one in the shape of a full sphere
+ The barriers will stop expanding on contact with another person or a witch. They can't be created in a space occupied by another person or a witch.

Be careful!: Emi surrounds her body with a protective field, visible only from floating wisps of magic glowing about her form. Costs 75.
+ Lasts about a minute and a half
+ Just like barriers, breaks when it runs out of strength
+ Can be applied to others

Back at you!: Similar to Emi's standard circular shield, this variation creates a much smaller shield that barely lasts a second, but seems to be able to perfectly reflect attacks that strike it. It takes timing and precision, but could be a lifesaver. Costs 100.

Profile The innocent
A bright young girl, age 14. One of Emi's friends from class, a 2nd year just like her. She's very emotional and honest. At school, she's a member of the gardening club. Her grades are above average though she struggles with English. She aspires to be a doctor.

Other info
Height: 5' / ~152cm
Hair color/Eye color: Blonde/Brown
Magical status: Contracted. Wished to heal Emi from fatal injuries.
Corruption capacity: 750
Gem color: Yellow

A maul, approx 5'6" long with a large head. Impacts from its swings are very powerful.
Healing hands: Moe's wish has given her healing powers. Her healing magic, standard to magical girls, is vastly improved in effectiveness and efficiency. The cost is relatively low to start, although very large or serious wounds can still eat up a lot of magic.
+ Moe's experimentation at the hospital led her to discover this can be used at a distance

Profile The vagabond
An odd and threatening girl that doesn't hold territory, instead wandering Kasamino and doing what she likes with no regard for territorial boundaries. She seems straightforward and highly temperamental, as her moods make her a bit unpredictable.

Other info
Height: 5'3" / ~161cm
Hair color/Eye color: Light brown/Red
Magical status: Contracted. Wish unknown.
Corruption capacity: Unknown
Gem color: Pink

???
Flight: Shiori can fly with seemingly complete control.

Exploding Projectiles: Shiori is able to throw exploding projectiles from her hands, which seems to be her main method of attack.

Profile The mask
A 3rd year at Jusho Middle School, the same school Emi attends. She has an overly happy but somewhat peculiar disposition. Claims she ages by two years when she transforms.

Doesn't talk about her wish. According to her mother, suffers from an anxiety disorder.

Her parents seem to behave peculiarly, as well.

Other info
Height (Transformed): 5'2" / ~157cm (5'4" / ~164cm)
Hair color/Eye color: Lavender purple/Purple
Magical Status: Contracted. Wish unknown.
Corruption Capacity: 3000
Gem color: Purple

A short staff with a large heart shaped ornament as its head. It's about two and a half feet long.

Weapon Abilities

Radius: The tip of the staff can fire beams of light. Their accuracy is poor, with heavy deviation regardless of aim. Their strength isn't amazing, but a direct hit would cause a magical girl a good deal of pain.
Tempus acceperam: Aiko can "rewind'" something's physical state. It does not undo anything that has happened to the object. After a short time, it will happen again, on top of any further damage it sustained while "fixed". Provides the benefit of complete, instant healing, but if the magic is not used repeatedly, all injuries will occur again. Costs 100 per 30 seconds of "rewinding".

Profile The fearful
A 13 year old girl. She is a 1st year at Isuto Middle School, a school toward the eastern side of Kasamino. She is somewhat cowardly. She is allies with and holds a small territory with Kohaku and Zaha. She thinks Kohaku is really cool. She and Kohaku seem pretty close.

Other info

Height: 5'2" / ~157cm
Hair/Eye color: White/Purple
Magical Status: Contracted. Wish unknown.
Corruption capacity: 1250
Gem color: Blue

A sword. There didn't appear to be anything special about it.
Unknown for the most part, though it seems likely that Nanako's magic allows her to transfer injuries from one person to another.

Profile The indignant
Isuto middle school's resident delinquent, according to Zaha. Incredibly abrasive, highly aggressive and quick to anger. Fiercely protective of Nanako. She and Nanako seem pretty close.

Other info
Height: 5'3" / ~160cm
Hair/Eye color: Sandy blonde/Deep red
Magical Status: Contracted. Wish unknown.
Corruption capacity: 1500
Gem color: Red

A large metal club. Aside from how easily it destroyed Emi's barriers, there was nothing notable about it.
EXPLOSIONS

Profile The unremembered
Another student at Isuto, most likely. She's an ally to Nanako and Kohaku. Appears cold and indifferent at first, but it seems she's more just very poised and serious. She seems to be the de facto leader of their trio, and is protective of the other two.

Other info
Height: 5'1"
Hair/Eye color: Dark green/Green
Magical Status: Contracted. Wish unknown.
Corruption capacity: 900
Gem color: Green

Daggers, each about a foot in length. She can make several kinds, for throwing, melee, or even a sort of parrying dagger. Her skill with all forms of these daggers is frightening. Against witches, their power is occasionally lacking, but against smaller targets they prove as vicious as any other weapon.
Deja vu: Her power forces people to briefly forget about her, including where and who she is. I'VE JUST BEEN IN THIS PLACE BEFORE
+The memories return shortly, and even faster if the target knows of her power and concentrates on remembering. HIGHER ON THE STREET
+Her power loses efficacy the closer she is to the target. If touching, it has no effect. AND I KNOW IT'S MY TIME TO COME HOME
+If she uses her power while touching somebody, it applies to them as well (e.g if she uses it while touching an ally, others will forget about both Zaha and her ally.) WHOOOAAA! DEJA VU!

Profile The heroic
A recent contractee with a month of experience. Her father is the minister of the Sakura Church. Seems kind and friendly, while also fairly independent. She has one sister, Momo, who is nearly the same age as her; they seem pretty close.

Other info
Height: 5'1" / ~154cm
Hair/Eye color: Red/Red
Magical Status: Contracted. Wish unknown.
Corruption capacity: 1900
Gem color: Red

A long spear.
Fantoccio: Kyoko can create illusionary copies of herself. They are mere illusions, and cannot interact with actual, physical objects. They are dispelled if hit with an attack.

Rosso Fantasma: Kyoko can create actual clones of herself, to fight with her. They seem to share her strength, and even copy magical effects that were applied to Kyoko.

Profile The devout
A devout Christian and seemingly kind girl. Attends service at the Sakura Church, located in the forest at the south of Kasamino. Frequently gives away grief seeds...only if the receiver agrees to return the used seed.

Other info
Height: 5'2" / ~156cm
Hair/Eye color: Dark Brown/Black
Magical Status: Contracted. Wish unknown.
Corruption capacity: Unknown
Gem color: White

???
???

Profile The worn
An old(?) magical girl Emi met by coincidence. Her entire body and especially her face are decorated with scars. She is the veteran that has taken a large amount of the Northern portion of Kasamino to herself. Not actively hostile, but intimidating. Smokes.

Other info
Height: 5'5" / ~165cm
Hair/Eye color: Red/Red
Magical Status: Contracted. Wish unknown.
Corruption capacity: Unknown.
Gem color: Red

I'm gonna put some basic descriptions of the witches that have shown up, just to...I dunno, make them a bit more interesting. Hopefully. That or they'll sound lamer. Iunno.

The popular witch with a lonely nature.

Monica's appearance is that of a series of tough tendrils and bones that make up the appearance of the human nervous system. Her figure is about 4 meters tall.

This witch is the one that hatched from a seed that Aiko accidentally overused.

Her barrier takes the appearance of an intimidating cityscape, crowded with narrow roads and towering buildings that block the sun's light. This is just as well, because the hated sun's light within her barrier is hot enough to cause severe burns. Monica herself wanders these roads constantly, searching for privacy that she'll never find in the streets crowded by her many admirers. She attacks by whipping her branch-like limbs at her targets. If she finds a human, she will strangle them carefully.

Her familiars, Amic. Their duty is to adore. They, like Monica, wander the twisted streets of the barrier. However, while Monica's path is aimless, the familiars will always be drawn toward her, hoping to catch sight of their idol. They ignore all else, even intruders to the barrier. Only when Monica commands them will they move with any other purpose, though their power is trifling. Even in large numbers they would pose little threat to a magical girl, as they possess strength like that of a normal human, with even less durability.

The warrior witch with a protective nature.

Fully encased in beautiful heavy armor, which is layered over by thick shields. There is no body under the armor, as her true form is that of a semi-free floating cloud of sharp metal objects. The suit of armor stands over 10 meters tall.

Her barrier is a wonderfully decorated castle fitting a knight of her caliber. While the structure is massive to support herself, the decorations in most areas are small so that others, including intruders, can appreciate the pieces of decorative art dedicated to the one she truly cares about.

Her room is full of things reminding her of that one. She keeps a single massive art gallery dedicated to the object of her devotion, the one she would die to protect. If an intruder does anything to it, she will know. And she will appear.

Her familiars' duty is to maintain and protect the many, many pieces around the castle. Though she is also somewhat protective of the familiars themselves.

This is very much poorly maintained. I somewhat doubt I'll be adding more witches, since there's been so many since Brynn.

Don't mind me just testing vote tally program since I've never used it before.
I don't think I'll lock it yet, I'll just hold out hope I'll attract 2 or 3 more people. I'm going out soon so I guess either way I'll write when I come back.

I'd suggest grabbing a copy of the other tally program so you can double check that votes are right. sometimes one will have an issue that the other will catch.

Don't mind me, I'm just here to see if our poor decision making skills can make GonnaSneeze sneeze.

tbh I'm not expecting so many votes that I'll really NEED the tally program, but I wanted to make sure I knew how to use it. Also it looks more professional or something.

[X] I still want to help you, Chiharu! Please!

Oh and I may have forgotten to mention this, but this next update is taking you really far.
I did say the first post is a prologue, and that extends to this one. Updates after this one should be normal.

And much shorter. Because, goddamn, the longer I spend writing this the more I wonder if it was a good idea to plan on putting so much in one update...

Alright I've been adding these notes as I write, and this is after just finishing that update: Fuck. This is waaaay long. I do mean it when I say future updates won't be long, like this. After this point we're living life by the seat of our pants. Setup and prologue is over!

You shake your head rapidly, then bring up your hands to wipe away the tears pooling in your eyes.

"I can't...!" You continue even as her face falls. "I still want to help you, Chiharu! Please!"

She lets go of you and stands up, hands clenched tight.

"Chiharu...?"

"You want to help me..." she starts, "You, you want to help me, how?"

"Eh?" You look up at her with a mixture of concern and confusion. As you begin to rise, Chiharu's shouting voice startles you back down.

"What makes you think you could help me!? What have you ever done!?"

"I..." What? What is she saying? "I just thought...you...I..."

"You think you'd be helpful?" Chiharu is visibly shaking again, though you don't know if it's because she's furious or if she's still trying not to cry. Or both. "You think it would HELP me if you sold your soul and became a lifeless monster?"

"I-"

"It wouldn't! You couldn't help me, Emi. If you became like me, you'd be in the way! You think I could kill witches for us both!?" Tears are flowing easily, but it's not slowing her down. "Don't be so stupid to think selling your soul just like that somehow makes things alright, like throwing your life away will fix anything. That's so selfish, Emi!"

You're frozen in shock. Chiharu...has never been like this before. She turns to walk out. You weakly call out, hoping to stop her.

"Chiharu...wait, I'm...I didn't mean-!"

Her head turns back, and one look at her crying face crushes your words before they can form. You stare at her eyes for a moment, hoping maybe she's changed her mind, but she sets her gaze forward again and leaves your room.

You try to follow her, but she's quickly leaving your house. You call after her just as she walks out the door and jumps away. One look at the shattered ground outside your door tells you you won't be following her.

You're glad your mother isn't home, because your crying is loud and ugly. As soon as you're coherent enough, you try to call Chiharu. Of course she won't answer. You send her a text instead, and pray she'll answer.
Emi said:
Chiharu...are you alright? Where are you? I'm sorry. I didn't mean it, Chiharu.
Minutes pass, and you're more and more certain she won't reply. The waterworks are starting again when your phone chimes.
Chiharu said:
You don't need anyone to tell you how to respond to that. Your fingers fly in response.
Emi said:
Of course not! We're friends! Please, are you alright?
The wait is significantly longer this time. The sky is getting darker all the time, and you can't stop worrying about her. The response does finally come.
Chiharu said:
That's it...? You try texting her again, repeatedly voicing apologies and concerns, but no further responses come. You call her parents, but they say she hasn't come home, and now you have them worried as well.
After a night spent worrying, you're unsure what to do. With no idea where Chiharu's gone, there's nothing you CAN do, really. You glance at the clock...it's already excessively late. With great difficulty, you manage to fall asleep for the night, hoping by tomorrow morning the situation is ready to come around.

==

You slowly sit up, eyes still red, body still sore.

It's been three days. Chiharu never did go home. She's been missing since she left that night. You refuse to dwell on what this means. Her parents contacted the police, and there's been searches over these few days, as well as some brief questioning for you. Of course nothing you can offer is helpful. All you could even say was that the two of you had a fight, and she left crying. Of course, the police managed to locate her phone thanks to GPS, but it was discarded on top of a building.

That puzzled police, who assumed she must have jumped from said building, but could find no trace of her in the area. So the search was still ongoing.

Groggily, you get up and shuffle to your ancient PC. Everyone else has laptops, but so far you've been stuck with an ugly box contraption someone dared to call a computer. You start the morning the same as your last few, checking online for news on the search for Chiharu.

Oh. The search was finished. "Missing 14 year old found dead". You slowly read, learning further. Her corpse was found, but official word is that cause of death cannot be determined.

You want to die. You at least want to cry. But no tears come. All of your tears have leaked out in the last few days and none are left. Besides...for the most part, you knew already. Actually, you had hoped...they wouldn't find her. If Chiharu was "missing" for weeks...then months...then you think, you would have still been able to accept it. You didn't want to know how it happened.

The police don't know, of course. But...they found her body, in perfect condition. Just the thought of what it might mean-
It might mean...!

You quickly hunch over, dragging your small trash can over and weakly heaving into it. The can remains surprisingly empty. That's right...you've been doing this a lot, too. And you haven't eaten in a while.

As soon as you turn off the screen, you see a familiar silhouette in the reflection, sitting in your window.

"You still have potential, Emi Yoshishige. You can-"

Without thought, you throw the nearest object you have at it. Ah, a text book. Sufficiently heavy. Of course, you miss, the book smashing into the wall, but you don't care.

"Go! Go away!"

Its tail swishes a few more times, before it gets up and leaps out of the windowsill. Thank god.

What do you do now? What can you do...? You trudge back to your bed, flopping over and burying your face in the pillow. As you close your eyes, there's a knock at the door.

"Emi? Are you awake?"

You just want to sleep...just five minutes, you think. You're quickly claimed by a restless sleep.

==

You wake up to the sound of your alarm, as always. You sit up yawning and start to get ready.

You're lost in thought as your stare in the mirror, brushing your teeth. It's already been two years? It felt like time had stopped for a while...but after you moved into a new city with your mom, life has been so busy that you guess it's sped by. You're still thankful that Kyubey has never shown up after that last morning. Just thinking about him makes you want to-

Aaaand spit. You continue, going through the usual morning hygiene, and head out to make breakfast. Of course mom is still asleep. She's pretty busy at work after all. You're glad she got such a well paying job, though.

Eventually your mom shambles out looking for food, just as you finish preparing...well, a poor breakfast. You're not so great, but...you manage to make rice and eggs with some tea, every morning.

"g'morning Emi."

"Morning, mom."

You both sit down, eating. Neither of you really say anything more...yet another quiet breakfast in the Yoshishige household. Won't be long before you're leaving for school.

As you take a sip of tea, you wonder...

[] Try to converse. Morning small talk.

[] Remain silent. There's nothing really to say.

haha no. we need at least three more days before it's the appropriate time for us to start to come out of our funk.

we need at least three more days before it's the appropriate time for us to start to come out of our funk.
Uhhhh
It's already been two years?
I guess it wasn't too clear what it's been two years since, but it's been two years since your life got flipped turned upside down, aka Chiharu died. In that time you've moved into a new city with your mom, who had to relocate for a nice job she scored.

I mean...you could still wait 3 days if you want...

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS
I SHOULD'VE STUCK TO SHITPOSTING

Since 3 people apparently misunderstood I take it as my own incompetence
It's okay I have an excuse it's my first quest

[X] Try to converse. Morning small talk.

We'll need a distraction from those memories.
