[X] I still want to help you, Chiharu! Please!
Oh and I may have forgotten to mention this, but this next update is taking you
really far.
I did say the first post is a prologue, and that extends to this one. Updates after this one should be normal.
And
much shorter. Because, goddamn, the longer I spend writing this the more I wonder if it was a good idea to plan on putting so much in one update...
Alright I've been adding these notes as I write, and this is after just finishing that update: Fuck. This is waaaay long. I
do mean it when I say future updates won't be long, like this. After this point we're living life by the seat of our pants. Setup and prologue is over!
You shake your head rapidly, then bring up your hands to wipe away the tears pooling in your eyes.
"I can't...!" You continue even as her face falls. "I still want to help you, Chiharu! Please!"
She lets go of you and stands up, hands clenched tight.
"Chiharu...?"
"You want to help me..." she starts, "You, you want to help me, how?"
"Eh?" You look up at her with a mixture of concern and confusion. As you begin to rise, Chiharu's shouting voice startles you back down.
"What makes you think you could help me!? What have you ever done!?"
"I..." What? What is she saying? "I just thought...you...I..."
"You think you'd be helpful?" Chiharu is visibly shaking again, though you don't know if it's because she's furious or if she's still trying not to cry. Or both. "You think it would HELP me if you sold your soul and became a lifeless
monster?"
"I-"
"It
wouldn't! You couldn't help me, Emi. If you became like me, you'd be
in the way! You think I could kill witches for us both!?" Tears are flowing easily, but it's not slowing her down. "Don't be so
stupid to think selling your soul just like that somehow makes things alright, like throwing your life away will fix anything. That's so
selfish, Emi!"
You're frozen in shock. Chiharu...has never been like this before. She turns to walk out. You weakly call out, hoping to stop her.
"Chiharu...wait, I'm...I didn't mean-!"
Her head turns back, and one look at her crying face crushes your words before they can form. You stare at her eyes for a moment, hoping maybe she's changed her mind, but she sets her gaze forward again and leaves your room.
You try to follow her, but she's quickly leaving your house. You call after her just as she walks out the door and jumps away. One look at the shattered ground outside your door tells you you won't be following her.
You're glad your mother isn't home, because your crying is loud and ugly. As soon as you're coherent enough, you try to call Chiharu. Of course she won't answer. You send her a text instead, and pray she'll answer.
Emi said:
Chiharu...are you alright? Where are you? I'm sorry. I didn't mean it, Chiharu.
Minutes pass, and you're more and more certain she won't reply. The waterworks are starting again when your phone chimes.
Chiharu said:
You don't need anyone to tell you how to respond to that. Your fingers fly in response.
Emi said:
Of course not! We're friends! Please, are you alright?
The wait is significantly longer this time. The sky is getting darker all the time, and you can't stop worrying about her. The response does finally come.
Chiharu said:
That's it...? You try texting her again, repeatedly voicing apologies and concerns, but no further responses come. You call her parents, but they say she hasn't come home, and now you have
them worried as well.
After a night spent worrying, you're unsure what to do. With no idea where Chiharu's gone, there's nothing you CAN do, really. You glance at the clock...it's already excessively late. With great difficulty, you manage to fall asleep for the night, hoping by tomorrow morning the situation is ready to come around.

You slowly sit up, eyes still red, body still sore.
It's been three days. Chiharu never did go home. She's been missing since she left that night. You refuse to dwell on what this means. Her parents contacted the police, and there's been searches over these few days, as well as some brief questioning for you. Of course nothing you can offer is helpful. All you could even say was that the two of you had a fight, and she left crying. Of course, the police managed to locate her phone thanks to GPS, but it was discarded on top of a building.
That puzzled police, who assumed she must have jumped from said building, but could find no trace of her in the area. So the search was still ongoing.
Groggily, you get up and shuffle to your ancient PC. Everyone else has laptops, but so far you've been stuck with an ugly box contraption someone dared to call a computer. You start the morning the same as your last few, checking online for news on the search for Chiharu.
Oh. The search was finished. "Missing 14 year old found dead". You slowly read, learning further. Her corpse was found, but official word is that cause of death cannot be determined.
You want to die. You at least want to
cry. But no tears come. All of your tears have leaked out in the last few days and none are left. Besides...for the most part, you knew already. Actually, you had hoped...they wouldn't find her. If Chiharu was "missing" for weeks...then months...then you think, you would have still been able to accept it. You didn't
want to know how it happened.
The police don't know, of course. But...they found her body, in perfect condition. Just the thought of what it might mean-
It might mean...!
You quickly hunch over, dragging your small trash can over and weakly heaving into it. The can remains surprisingly empty. That's right...you've been doing this a lot, too. And you haven't eaten in a while.
As soon as you turn off the screen, you see a familiar silhouette in the reflection, sitting in your window.
"You still have potential, Emi Yoshishige. You can-"
Without thought, you throw the nearest object you have at it. Ah, a text book. Sufficiently heavy. Of course, you miss, the book smashing into the wall, but you don't care.
"Go! Go away!"
Its tail swishes a few more times, before it gets up and leaps out of the windowsill. Thank god.
What do you do now? What can you do...? You trudge back to your bed, flopping over and burying your face in the pillow. As you close your eyes, there's a knock at the door.
"Emi? Are you awake?"
You just want to sleep...just five minutes, you think. You're quickly claimed by a restless sleep.
==
You wake up to the sound of your alarm, as always. You sit up yawning and start to get ready.
You're lost in thought as your stare in the mirror, brushing your teeth. It's already been two years? It felt like time had stopped for a while...but after you moved into a new city with your mom, life has been so busy that you guess it's sped by. You're still thankful that Kyubey has never shown up after that last morning. Just thinking about him makes you want to-
Aaaand spit. You continue, going through the usual morning hygiene, and head out to make breakfast. Of course mom is still asleep. She's pretty busy at work after all. You're glad she got such a well paying job, though.
Eventually your mom shambles out looking for food, just as you finish preparing...well, a poor breakfast. You're not so great, but...you manage to make rice and eggs with some tea, every morning.
"
g'morning Emi."
"Morning, mom."
You both sit down, eating. Neither of you really say anything more...yet another quiet breakfast in the Yoshishige household. Won't be long before you're leaving for school.
As you take a sip of tea, you wonder...
[] Try to converse. Morning small talk.
[] Remain silent. There's nothing really to say.
