1. New Game!

Vesvius

The Wicked God
From a young age, everyone's parents try to teach them valuable lessons that they take with them for the rest of their lives. They range from the basic- "Don't put a fork in an electrical socket"- to the slightly more complex- "If you're going to get drunk the night before a job interview make sure the gum you chew the next morning isn't all that minty". But no piece of parental wisdom is as simple and widespread as "look both ways before crossing the street".

You don't know about anyone else but that was the first thing you really remember your Mother telling you back when you were only as tall as her knee. She had looked down at you, smiled, and said "Make sure to look both ways before going! Even if the green man is there on the light, make sure to check that no one is coming."

And so you did. And so you continued to do all throughout your life. You looked both ways before crossing the road each and every time you went across one. But it wasn't just the roads. You checked both ways before you crossed anything. A path. A creek. A room. No matter what it was, you looked both ways before you went across them.

Which is why it sucks so much when you're standing in line for your morning coffee and you're hit by a bus.

Well- one of the reasons it sucks so much.

The other is that you've been hit by a fucking bus!

A scream rips it's way from your throat as the metal death machine smashes into you at top speed. You scream long and loud, longer and louder than you thought was possible. For what seems like forever you bellow your pain to the world. But as you inhale to keep going, you realize that something's a bit off. After all, if you're hurt as bad as you thought you would be, you likely wouldn't have been able to scream for that long.

Yeah. You're probably fine. It probably just grazed you. You'll need to go to the hospital, sure, but you'll be fine. A feeling a relief sweeps through you, making you feel like a weight as heavy as the Statue of Liberty has been removed from your shoulders. You stop your screaming. No need to add to the scene that's going on-

Wait. Why can't you hear anything?

You strain your ears. Sure enough, there's no sound. No chaos like you would expect to hear after the L plowed through the front of a quaint local coffee place. No screaming. At least, no screaming that isn't coming from you. You can't even hear that gimmicky 'muzak' that coffee shops insist on playing to appear ahead of the times.

And why can't you see anything either?! There're no walls around you, no people, no artwork, no fiery wreckage. After straining your eyes, you can barely make out two things: a heavy cover of clouds above you where a ceiling should be, and a small crumpled thing far below you. You squint and peer down, trying as hard as you can to see what that little thing is and- huh.

Okay, you might be wrong, but you're pretty sure that twisted thing down there is you.

And that feeling of lightness in your head and body isn't relief.

As you struggle to comprehend that you're far down below you and somehow up here at the same time- WHAT. WHAT IS THIS. HOW. WHY.- you feel yourself rising closer and close to the clouds above you. You try to drop back down, first by trying to just fall over to no avail. You just continue to rise through the air as if you're on an invisible elevator. Flipping around and trying to swim back down towards yourself works no better. All it does is mean you don't see it when you enter the clouds.

You give up your freestyle stroke as you break through the barrier. Now that you can't see yourself, getting back to the twisted mess of flesh and bone that looks like it was you seems far less important. Instead you stand back up on your invisible platform that encompasses your entire body and look around. Below you are the clouds. Above and around you is nothing.

Nothing except a small twinkling light above your head. As you notice it, the light flickers and grows, forming into letters.

GAME OVER

...the hell?

Final Score: 124,533
Final Rank: Pointless

That just seems unnecessarily cruel.

Also, very strange. And confusing.

It only gets more confusing as the giant Game Over above you scrolls up as if it's the opening crawl of Star Wars. It's replaced by what can only be a scoreboard that seems to be chronicling every aspect of your life. 1,000 points for learning to walk. 1 point every time you successfully used the toilet. Minus 5 points for getting caught cheating on a math test in third grade. Minus 1,500 points for being quote a 'blank slate of a person'.

You can only gape as your life score scrolls by. Finally it ends with -200 points for a violent death, leaving only the emptiness once more. Until new glowing letters emerge.

NEW GAME?

So. It seems your life is- was- a video game? That's the meaning of life? The question people have puzzled over since the dawn of time? The meaning of life is… to get a high score.

And now your game is over. And the universe is asking if you want to start a new game. Before you realize it your mouth is moving. "Yeah! Yes. Yeah! New game!"

You really don't want to find out what happens to 'pointless' people when they say no.

The light flickers and shimmers, lurching in place like a bad TV picture. The new game prompt vanishes, replaced by another message.

RESPONSE ACCEPTED. NEW GAME INITIATED.

ERROR. ERROR. DATA CORRUPTION. PREVIOUS GAME: "The Humdrum Life of Average Joe" NOT FOUND. SCANNING FOR POSSIBLE REPLACEMENTS.

Uhhh…

SCANNING. SCANNING. SCANNING. SCANNING. SCANNING. SCAN- SUBSTITUTION FOUND

The light resolves itself once again into a full picture, unfurling in front of you like a scroll. Music begins to play in your head, taiko drums and woodwind instruments. A map of a large continent unveils itself. Smoke rises off different parts of the map and forms solid letters before your eyes.

WELCOME TO NEW GAME: ELEMENTAL!

Elemental? But you want to relive your own life! Go back, not get killed by a bus this time! Maybe make something of yourself instead of just moseying along through life and taking things as they come! You know everything that happens in the future too! If you could just go back to your old life, you could be the richest and most powerful man in the world!

"I don't want a different game!" you protest at the universe. "I want my old life back!"

"The Humdrum Life of Average Joe" CANNOT BE FOUND. NEW GAME SUBSTITUTED. MATCH WITH PREVIOUS LOADED FILE: 85%

"But-"

WOULD YOU LIKE TO START A NEW GAME?

"I-"

WOULD YOU LIKE TO START A NEW GAME?
"I just want-"

WOULD YOU LIKE TO START A NEW GAME? REFUSAL SHUTS DOWN THE SYSTEM.

Okay, the universe knows you're arguing with you. And you're pretty sure that's a threat. You don't like the way that that last thing was menacingly spelled out, slower than the letters before it.

It looks like you have no choice. "Fine. Yes, I'll start a new game of whatever this is."

WELCOME TO "Elemental"! PLEASE SELECT STARTING LOCATION!"

The words vanish like the vapor they were made from and turn into icons that hang over different parts of the map. You peer at them closely. They're all fairly simple, a line or a series of lines. They're almost like abstract art. Very familiar abstract art. The one in the middle is the one that catches your eye the most:

"WHAT IN THE ABSOLUTE FUCK?!" you roar out.

MATCH PERCENTAGE WITH OLD GAME: 85%

"Like fuck it is! I think the goddamn Naruto world, with Ninjas and apocalypse cults and throwing fucking dragons made of fire out of mouth hands or whatever the hell they do there, is a little more than 15% different from my life!"

No new words appear. The universe seems to be tired of arguing with you. The prompts have also all vanished. There's no way to go back to what you're going to guess is the title screen, and no way to quit if you wanted to.

So you're stuck here. About to go into the Naruto World.

...you might as well pick your starting location.

Where do you start your game?
[] Konohagakure, the Village Hidden in the Leaves, located in the Land of Fire.
[] Kirigakure, the Village Hidden in the Mist, located in the Land of Water.
[] Kumogakure, the Village Hidden by the Clouds, located in the Land of Lightning.
[] Iwagakure, the Village Hidden by the Rocks, located in the Land of Earth.
[] Sunagakure, the Village Hidden in the Sand, located in the Land of Wind.
[] Shukufuku, a humble village with no Shinobi presence, located north of the Land of Fire.

I. What is this?
So last week, when I was debating on what new project to start, I had two ideas. One, I've already posted: the Marvel Universe Hopper Quest. Astute readers may have noticed I haven't posted an actual update for that yet. That's because after I posted the first part I found I really didn't feel like doing the rest. It just seemed like a good idea, but now it's meh. I still like the concept though; I'll probably come back to it later.

The second was this: Naruto, GAME OF THE YEAR. A video game Naruto quest in the mold of the old school Game of the Year fics. Not 'The Gamer'. Never read it, not planning on it. 'Game of the Year'. Big difference. I loved those fics, and when I got the idea to do a quest based on them, it really appealed to me.

Also, long time Vesvius followers may remember that my start in fandom came over a decade ago with some pretty awful Naruto fanfiction. Trying it again but not sucking also appeals to me.

So here we are with Naruto: Game of the Year. Let's see how this one goes. However it goes, however long it lasts, I hope everyone enjoys!

III. Mechanics
Game of the Year
The Mechanics 1.3
Subject to frequent patches as needed
Thanks to @Maugan Ra for allowing me to cannibalize their system

Game of the Year will be running on a narrative basis. Not only does this cater far more to my style than any amount of numbers could, both Naruto and Video Game stories feature a hell of a lot of bizarre and strange powers that are nearly impossible to quantify. Trying to put them to numbers is a losing task.

However, in order to make decisions on what you want your PC to do, you'll need to know what he's capable of. As such, your character will be represented on his character sheet by the following things: Skills, Attributes, Techniques, and Perks (Covered below). These can all be improved/added to by spending Experience. EXP can be acquired in one of two ways. First, it will be acquired by the PC passively as he focuses on different tasks in his life. If you want to steer how that EXP accumulates, I heavily recommend attempting to vote for things that would utilize the desired skills.

The other way to acquire EXP is by blatant bribery- er, by earning it yourself. EXP will be given out as rewards for omakes, fanart, or by doing anything else that makes me have more fun writing this quest. You gain anywhere from 1 to 200 EXP for omakes or fanart, and anything else will be rewarded based on quality and enjoyment.

Skills
A skill is something that the PC has put effort into learning or something that they have picked up as a consequence of the game. They are divided up into three categories: physical, mental, and social. Though some basic skills have already been added to the sheet, further ones can be discovered over the course of the game.

Skills are graded as follows:
  • Untrained (N/A): You have some idea of this skill, but can't really use it with any reliability under pressure.
  • Student (100 XP): You're more used to using this skill, and can use it when you need it. Most children reach this level.
  • Practiced (200 XP): You're accustomed to this skill. You can use it without fail. This is the level that Academy Students must reach in order to graduate.
  • Adept (400 XP): You know the ins and outs of this skill, and even know some tricks with it that others don't. A career genin tops out at this level.
  • Journeyman (800 XP): You're an old hand with this skill. You love using it, and it tends to be one of your first instincts when you come across an issue. An experienced but undistinguished chunin reaches this level
  • Expert (1600 XP): You're regarded as one of the premier leaders in this skill. People look up to you and come to you for advice with it. A special jounin would reach this in their specialty.
  • Elite (3200 XP): You're reaching the pinnacle of this ability. Going any higher than this requires more than training, more than skill. It requires devotion, dedication, and an innate talent that can't be taught. An elite jounin would average at this level.
  • Anything higher than Elite cannot be attained simply through EXP. It must also be done via story, and have narrative reason to happen.
  • Master (5000 XP): You are the unquestioned sage of this skill. Going higher than this is not meant for mortal men. The Kages reach this plateau.
  • Legendary (7000 XP): You can't simply be mortal to reach this level of skill. It just isn't possible. You've left the ranks of men and entered the realm of folklore. Songs are stories are written about your mastery and your teachings will be studied for centuries after you've shuffled off the mortal coil.
  • Mythical (9500 XP): You've reached a place that isn't believed to exist. No one thinks that this can be done, and any stories told about you are laughed out of any reputable tavern. Your tales are told in hushed whispers around campfires and your exploits are dismissed as children's stories- but they're very, very real.
  • Divine (12500 XP): …how?

Attributes
An attribute is a core characteristic of a person. They are divided into three sections (Physical, Mental, and Social) and serve as the baseline for what they are capable of.

Attributes are graded as follows:
  • Forgettable (N/A): You are a person, and thus you have this attribute. That is that.
  • Simple (400 XP): You have put some effort into this aspect of yourself. Whether it be lifting weights or working on your personal hygiene, you've done more than the bare minimum.
  • Above Average (800 XP): You're a little ahead of the pack when it comes to this attribute. You're a little bit stronger, a hair smarter, just a little bit better looking.
  • Superhuman (1300 XP): You stand at the top of the ladder when it comes to this attribute. It's rare that you're beaten in any aspect of this.
  • Pinnacle (2000 XP): You're not just the leader of the pack, you're the unquestioned master of it. No one's as strong, no one's smarter, and your smile is classified as a category 5 jutsu.
Techniques
A technique is a specific trick or ability that you can do. Each one falls under a parent skill (usually a Shinobi Art). In order to create a new technique, that skill must be ranked Adept or higher.
Techniques are graded as follows:
  • Basic (250 XP): You are capable of the technique and can use it comfortably in controlled situations.
  • Intermediate (500 XP): You are far more practiced with the technique, and are comfortable using it outside of the training ground and in live combat situations.
  • Advanced (750 XP): You have honed this technique to a fine edge, and can use it whenever you'd like instinctively.
  • Master (1000 XP): You are the unquestioned king of this technique, and can employ it in ways lesser users can't even comprehend.
Perks
Where skills, attributes, and techniques grow and can be trained, perks can not. Perks are the PC's character. They occur naturally over the course of the quest as choices are made and actions are performed. They can be earned through consistency (acting the same way reliably) or by deed (doing something majorly impressive).

Traits can evolve and change over time. The 'Baby' perk may turn into the 'Child' perk, and then the 'Preteen' perk, and then be lost forever as any benefits of childhood vanish with age.

New perks can be purchased with personal XP. The degree and severity of the perk dictate the cost. A simple perk that meshes with the rest of the protagonist's character may cost 50 XP, while something completely new that gives the character a previously unseen dimension may cost 500.

Achievements
Achievements are the main method by which 'Elemental' tracks your goals and accomplishments. Unlocking new Achievements is done by hitting new milestones and performing great deeds within the game. Achievements can be awarded for anything from minor things like performing well in history class to major things, like slaying one thousand enemies without taking a single scratch.

Achievements are tracked on their own page once they are discovered. See the 'Achievement' threadmark for it.

IV. Custom Technique Descriptions
Custom Technique Descriptions

Endless Sword (Ninjutsu, D-Rank): Daisuke channels chakra into his blade and strike downward, creating a blast of 'broken' air that damages and cuts anything in it's path. Endless Sword takes, at minimum, a fairly decent amount of chakra to activate, taking 1.5 times the amount it takes to use a standard elemental jutsu.

Endless Sword: Summer's Rain (Ninjutsu, C-Rank): One of the evolutions of the basic Endless Sword technique, Summer's Rain amps up the destructive power of Endless Sword to it's highest extent. Summer's Rain removes all limitations and focuses entirely on mass damage. It is a chakra intensive Jutsu, but any single target struck by it will usually not be an issue any longer.

Endless Sword: Winter's Stillness (Ninjutsu, C-Rank): One of the evolutions of the basic Endless Sword technique, Winter's Stillness sacrifices raw power in exchange for complete subtlety. It is only as strong as a normal sword strike- but it hits one target from up to 50 yards away with that sword strike. If utilized properly, it is an ideal assassination jutsu. It is a chakra intensive jutsu. Suppressing the natural destruction inherent to Endless Sword is no easy task.

Song of Discord (Genjutsu, C-Rank): Daisuke strikes multiple places on his sword with his closed fan, creating a string of notes that function like the Tone of Discord. Using these notes he's able to convey more complex and powerful effects then a simple tone can. Song of Discord takes approximately three times as much chakra to use as Tone does and it can be enhanced further.

Tone of Discord (Genjutsu, D-Rank): Daisuke strikes his sword with his closed fan, creating a sharp, unique tone of sound. He then uses that tone as a carrier for a Genjutsu probe which alters the target's mind in a small way. Currently, Tone of Discord can cause Anger, Vertigo, Nausea, Pleasure, and Confusion. Tone of Discord uses a variable amount of Chakra. At it's least effective, it takes slightly less then a standard Bunshin. But the more chakra is put into it, the more pronounced the effect is.

Christ, I haven't read a Naruto: Game of the Year story in years. Hopefully this will end up better than that drek. :D

[X] Shukufuku, a humble village with no Shinobi presence, located north of the Land of Fire.

Konoha is sorta the gimme here. The only other ones that miiight be doable are the Civilian Village and Kumo. Civilian Village is interesting because it's Hard Mode. You don't have a Ninja Infrastructure to teach you things or help you grow, but you also don't have a State Military breathing down your neck immediately. It's got potential, but also extreme risk that maybe isn't balanced out by the reward.

Iwa, Suna, and Kiri are all flat negatives. Iwa favors quantity over quality as a tactic, which isn't any kind of way to survive a Ninja Death World, Suna is bound to a nation ruled by a complete idiot, and Kiri... well... they don't call it the Bloody Mist for nothing.

Kumo and Konoha are both pretty net positive. They both train good strong shinobi. The issue that arises is what those Shinobi are required to do. Konoha has the Feel Good Good Guy Will of Fire, and Kumo focuses more on being a FATHERLAND ABOVE ALL kind of place. Then again, given the Japanese cultural antecedents everywhere, the latter is fairly ubiquitous.

Man though, I wish we could pick Uzushiogakure. Too bad it's probably long destroyed at this point...

Let's try something different for once and not Konoha

Alright, as the Civilian Village option seems to be gaining traction, let me run a quick cost benefit for the thread, with a bit more detail than my previous general one.

Most obviously, this option has the most immediate freedom. That's something of a mixed blessing though. While it does mean there are fewer obvious restrictions, it also means there are greater threats. Without a Ninja Village to fall back on, the MC is going to be open to harassment and exploitation by just about anyone and everyone that happens by. Minor Ninja Villages, the Five Great Villages, random Missing Ninja, anyone with a bit of power can show up and interact with the MC as they wish. That might mean trainers, but it also might mean a nice man coming by from the Village hidden in the Hot Water to spread the Good News.

The MC is going to look weird too, and stick out if the questers aren't careful. He'll learn quickly, and have quests and such that make him appear MCish. Given that, it honestly seems likely that if we go the Civilian Village option, the MC is likely to have the whole damn place burned down around him by whoever the Big Bad turns out to be as he flees from the ruined ashes of his childhood.

There are a number of weaker nations north of the Land of Fire the Civilian option might include, most of which have their own Minor Villages, or in the case of the Land of Iron, army of Samurai.

TLDR: Lots of plot hooks, lots of danger in Civilian Land.
