In the winter of 1934, Fuyuki City was the host of the 3rd Holy Grail War. A power struggle between the mage families, the Imperial Japanese Army, and the Nazi Party erupts over the magical wish granting device. As the fighting escalates, Fuyuki becomes a wasteland, with the citizens evacuating by the bus as conflicts erupt throughout the night. Not even the intervention of The Holy Church could curb the madness.

In the end, nobody won the Grail. One of the remaining Masters, his wife, and their Servant escaped with the Lesser Grail before the Heaven's Feel could be completed, last seen sailing out from the mouth of the Mion River and into the darkness of the Pacific Ocean. Wherever their destination was, the two were never heard from again.

Some theorize that they were caught in a storm and their ship sank to the bottom of the sea, with the Grail inside. Some believe that their Servant turned on them, and used the Grail to incarnate himself. Some believe they made it safely to their native South America, and then vanished into obscurity with the Grail in their possession. Most accepted that the Holy Grail Wars were over forever.

The year is 1994.

In the background of your dreaming mind, you hear the sound of waves crashing against the shore. You can smell ocean air and feel sunlight on your face. Whispered on the edge of consciousness are two words.

"Holy Grail"

When you awake, you find a map and a pen. You trace your fingers down through the Pacific Ocean until you find the spot you're looking for. You barely notice the command seals that have etched themselves across the back of your hand.

According to the map, there's nothing there but endless blue ocean. But you know the truth. The Grail awaits, and now you simply have to figure out how to reach it.

Welcome to Fate/Undertow an experimental Grail War RP! My name is LupineVolt and I'll be your GM this evening.

In F/U (Yes, I know what it sounds like) 7 heroic spirits and 7 masters must brave the perils of a deserted Island and the high seas in order to win the Holy Grail. That means no civilians running around, no Holy Church Overseer, and no long term structural damage.

On the flip side, this also means no convenience stores, fortified strongholds, or civilian souls to suck up for an extra boost of energy. Survival will be part of the game for this.

The seven classes are the classics. Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Berserker, and Assassin.

We will be using the rules and templates provided by the ruggedly handsome and devilishly clever @The Out Of World for this RP, I'd like to extend my thanks to him before we begin. I'd also like to thank @Wade Garrett, @TenfoldShields, and @ZerbanDaGreat for helping me brainstorm this up.

Timeline Differences
The last Grail War ended in 1934, after an extensive battle left most of Fuyuki City in flames. During the conflict, the Tohsaka and Matou families were wiped out by the fighting, and the Einzbern manor was demolished with the Master inside. Additionally, the Fuyuki Chapel was burned to the ground with the Overseer trapped inside.

The only unaccounted for Master and Servant was Marco Valdez and his servant, Rider. Some reports indicate that Marco's wife, Diedre, was also present in Fuyuki during the war. All three vanished without a trace after leaving Fuyuki City.

Tokiomi Tohsaka, Rin Tohsaka, Sakura Tohsaka-Matou, Zouken Matou-Makiri, Kariya Matou, Byakuya Matou, Shinji Matou, Irisviel von Einzbern, Illyasviel von Einzbern, Risei Kotomine and Kirei Kotomine do not exist in this timeline. Anyone who would still exist would exist as they would in 1994, roughly the time of the 4th Holy Grail War.

General Rules
  • Standard site regulations are in effect.
  • No God-modding.
  • This is a war; characters are going to die or be otherwise eliminated in some capacity.
  • If you intend to leave the RP, be sure to notify the GM beforehand and work something out regarding how you intend to have your character exit the stage. If you are absent without explanation for long enough to inconvenience your fellow players, control of your character may be passed to your partner, or you may be killed off entirely.
  • Be reasonable and polite when dealing with other players; caustic and/or condescending behavior will get you kicked from the RP. I am not obligated to accomodate you. I am responsible for making sure as many people enjoy this as possible, not for you personally to enjoy it.
  • All character applications will be submitted via PM. MAKE SURE you include @TenfoldShields and @Wade Garrett in your application PM
  • You will be expected to exercise some basic writing skills in this RP. If the GM has trouble understanding what you're writing, you won't get in.
  • This RP is set in the Nasuverse, and as such players are expected to have some basic understanding of the in-universe setting and mechanics prior to applying. If you honestly don't know something, check the wiki or the Type Moon General thread.
  • If you actually read the rules, put the word "Coconuts" at the beginning of your character application PM. Post that in the PM itself, not the title of the convo. If the GM does not see this present, it indicates you have ignored the rules and your application will be rejected. C'mon, people. I'm watching you. Especially you, Michael.
  • Any instance of cheating will be punished with an immediate ejection from the RP, as will causing moderator intervention. Excessively forcing the GM to intervene will do the same.
Character Creation Guidelines
  • Servants and Masters from modern fictional continuities are not allowed. Servants like Frankenstein, the Three Musketeers, or Sherlock Holmes are allowed. Katniss Everdeen, Harry Potter or Jolyne Joestar are not.
  • A Servant may not have more than 3 Noble Phantasms. Additionally, a Servant may not have more than 3 personal skills.
  • Double Summons are unavailable.
  • The servants Enkidu, Gilgamesh, Achilles, Hercules, Karna and Arjuna are off limits.
  • Masters cannot be Dead Apostle Ancestors, or anything nearly as powerful as them.
  • Less of a guideline and more of a suggestion: Make your mystic codes and catalysts something that can be easily carried with you. You do not have to adhere to this rule, but it will make things less complicated.
  • A Servant is expected to have the Class Skills provided by their container on their sheet. These are listed in the box below
Saber: Magic Resistance (Riding is optional)
Lancer: Magic Resistance
Archer: Magic Resistance, Independant Action
Caster: Territory Creation, Item Construction
Rider: Magic Resistance, Riding

With thanks to @Icarus for the grid!

This sounds pretty neat, though I have not discounted the possibility of this devolving into several Servants just throwing their anti-army+ phantasms at the island until everyone else dies. :V

I have two Masters I can choose from, though one of the cool potential things I wanted for one of them may not fly. Hm.

Ah, I see No Fun Allowed is in effect.

Seriously though, I appreciate the attempt to create a low-power Fate game. Or perhaps a more appropriate term is reasonable-power.
But please, not the skill quantity limits. Cu should be a perfectly acceptable sheet. Besides, quality's what makes them really OP.

Can you please just evaluate them and decide from that? I'll even help you. Haven't co-GM'd a Fate game yet, and it's past time.

This is technically false. Tumbling Down may have died before the IC went up, but you are Divider were Co-GMs.

Anyway, I may submit something. If anyone wants to create a team or something, I'm open to suggestions (Master or Servant).

Cu has an awful sheet. The three-personal-skill limit is entirely reasonable and even beneficial because that limitation will force anybody with a mind to skill bloat to actually think about what they're putting down. It keeps things focused.

You say that, but Cu has a skill that makes absolutely no sense on his sheet (Disengage, this being the man who tied himself up with his own intestines so he could continue fighting)

I'd say focus on getting three skills on your sheet, and if it passes muster, then you can propose a 4th skill afterwords. We can discuss things. I'm not unreasonable. But I don't think its necessary overall.

I do appreciate the offer, but I think I have all the help I need at the moment. Perhaps in the future if one of my partners has to drop out, though.

Well maybe this will give me the motivation to finish these sheets that I got scattered across my computer.

And to add my own two cent, I have found that limiting the Amount of Personal Skills actually makes writing sheets more fun.

I edited that because I double-checked and F/SN actually has three characters with too many skills.

Cu, who has Disengage despite never running from a fight in his life, and Protection from Arrows which has no real basis on anything and never comes into play in any meaningful respect besides the skirmish with Hassan in Heaven's Feel where he dies anyway.

Herc, who has Bravery despite the fact that it does Literally Fucking Nothing as a Berserker.

And Medusa, whose Mystic Eyes are a personal skill rather than a Noble Phantasm despite the fact that Medusa's eyes are literally her most famous aspect and Noble Phantasms are basically meant to represent that Servant in a sentence. Medusa's the only one to even slightly justify more than four skills because Divinity is basically a slot-tax skill that does nothing.

In fact it's seemingly just as common for Servants to only have two skills. Like the illustrious Gilles de Rais, whose claims to fame are "I'M FUCKING CUCKOO FOR COCOA-PUFFS!!!" and "I like art I guess."

Ah, okay.
Sorry if that was hostile. No Fun Allowed is a kind of an in-joke with OOW. First came up after he did this.

It's my understanding that Protection From Arrows also plays a part in Cu surviving Gil for a few hours in the Fate route.

It comes into play during a fight that's 100% offscreen? Oh my god how will I contain my excitement.
Hey, I never said it wasn't stupid or didn't deserve to be removed. Just pointed out that it was apparently used in one more place.

Those skills, while not really making sense to be on Cu's sheet, literally exist to justify certain events in the story, from my understanding.
