Behind You
Behold, the RinKaihou. A nocturnal lurker that has found itself moving at sufficient velocity before landing on his first thread. A quest, which may or may not end up successful considering the fact that the RinKaihou doesn't seem to know what it's doing.

Anywho, like stated above, I'm a lurker turned wannabe QM. I have no idea what I'm doing but I've hosted some tabletop games so hopefully, I'll muddle through somehow. Rolls are done in d100. Checks against DC based on what the current action is. Bonuses and penalties derived from the stuff in the character sheet. Trying to keep it simple.

Character Sheet

???
- You are in possession of the last remaining Mystic Code of your grandfather, a leatherbound grimoire oozing with magical power. Some of the so-called nobles also seem rather fascinated by it. +5 to charisma and diplomacy checks against Mystic Code researchers. +5 to intimidation against those with Magical Sense. +10 to prana channeling rolls (includes casting spells)

Hipster - Your conversations with Waver Velvet have led other magi to believe that you are one who goes against the status quo. -5 to Persuasion and Diplomacy rolls against "nobles".

Relationships

Waver Velvet (Acquaintance) -
A fellow lowborn magus. You understand each other's difficulties when it comes to a lack of prestige, reputation and resources. He currently considers you a decent listener.

Miles Fullerlyn (Student) -
He seems to treat you as a proper student. You're still wary of being stabbed in the back, especially since the things he did for you probably didn't come cheap, but he appears to be genuinely helping you.

Magecraft Acquired:

Fire Element (Novice) -
You've branched out into fire element magecraft. Most of your spells are theoretical so far but you're confident that you can at least light a candle.

Force (Novice) - While not a common branch of magecraft, manipulating kinetic force isn't exactly difficult. You figured that one of the Bounded Fields surrounding your grimoire might be a force based spell, especially since it seemed to have devastated your entire Workshop with sheer blunt impact. Having experienced its effects face first, you feel confident that you can eventually replicate the effects.

Fate/Grimoire
A Clock Tower Quest
You are a third-generation magus, whose mother was born of wedlock from an American magus and a cafe waitress.

You never knew your magus grandfather - you don't even know his name - and your mother didn't inherit a Magic Crest. Perhaps, your grandfather didn't even create one. Your mother had no interest in learning the magical arts, believing it to be the domain of the insane. You:

[]Want to learn more about your family history and find out what form of magecraft your grandfather used.
[]Family history? Why bother? I have magic. Time to launch fireballs and hypnotize people
[]Don't believe in magic
[]Write In

The only thing you know about your grandfather was the fact that he was born in Providence, Rhode Island. The United States was across the sea from London but it's your only lead to tracing your family legacy. Well, one of the two only leads. The other one is a book, a grimoire, locked by a seemingly simple leather belt with the letters UAT engraved on it. But your Magic Circuits heat up whenever you try to unclasp it, as though warning you of some great danger.

Currently, you are an eighteen-year old student of the Clock Tower, under the Department of General Invocations. Within this pit of vipers and backstabbers (and backstabbing vipers), you generally discuss your lessons with:

[]Seventeen year old Waver Velvet, a fellow magus of low status. While he doesn't look down on you like most nobles, he seems to be intent on rocking the boat with some ideas that you just know would bring the magus families down on your heads.
[]The heirs of well established magus families. They sneer in your direction and treat you like a favored servant, but you figure that making connections with them would make your life here easier.
[]Write In

Your magical studies are going well. Not brilliant, but not too shabby either. Your workshop is tiny and if it wasn't for the fact that you don't have that much material to begin with, you figure it would have been rather cramped. During your free time, you generally stay in your workshop and focus on:

[]Researching your mysteries. Your repertoire isn't that great. You have some knowledge of formalcraft and the basics of creating familiars. You also have theoretical knowledge of elemental invocation. But aside from that, you got nothing.
-Write In what to research.
[]Gathering resources. Aside from some very basic books on magecraft that you are accessible to all apprentices, you have no research materials. Mastering the basics is important but if you want to make your mark on this world, perhaps you have to delve into something.... unorthodox. To do that, you might need some rare tomes and reagents.
-Write In how to go about this
[]Socialize with your peers. Why stay in your dusty, cramped workshop when you can discuss mysteries with your friends. Sure, you might eye each other in friendly paranoia every now and then but attempting to reverse engineer the mysteries that other magi so closely guard is part of magus tradition.
[]Write In[]

If we're studying magic at the Clock Tower but don't believe magic, would we just assume it's science or somesuch? o.o'

It was for the sake of tracing your family genealogy that you delved into the secrets of magecraft. Thew Clock Tower has limited influence in America and most of the magus families don't really bother with foreigners, but you figure that at least one of these magi must be capable of helping you make heads or tails of your grimoire. But Clock Tower intrigue is dangerous and you know that if you trust the wrong person, you might end up dead, or worse.

Your enrollment in the Clock Tower was a harrowing experience. You had nothing to your name, no sponsors and barely any knowledge of magecraft when you first applied. It took the passing interest of Miles Fullerlyn, a branch member of a minor magus lineage and your current mentor, to get you through the interview process. Of course, he kept reminding you of all the favors he called in to get you into the Association, probably as a reminder that you owe him a rather significant debt.

During one of your discussions with Waver, the topic of Magic Crests came up. Magic Crests are the crystallization of a magus family's mysteries, etched into the very soul of their designated heir. These act as additional Magic Circuits for channeling prana, as well as a storage for the family's spells. Each possessor of the family's Magic Crest adds the significant portions of his research to it before passing it on to his or her successor, which gives credence to the strength of the older magus families. Waver has a different opinion, loudly exclaiming that a magus' hard work can overcome even the lack of a distinguished lineage. You notice some of the "nobles" sneering at the two of you.

Meanwhile, your efforts into converting prana into elemental forms are progressing steadily, if slowly. You realizew that this is probably due to your unawareness of your own elemental affinity. You know, due to prior research, that some family magecraft rely on specific elemental affinities to use. Maybe delving deeper into your genealogy might help? Alternatively, you could ask your "mentor" for help, but you're sure that it won't come free.

Choose two actions for the next four months:

[]Experiment with your family grimoire.
[]Keep practicing elemental conversion.
[]Switch tracks and study another branch of magecraft.
[]Interact with:
-Waver Velvet. Probably the closest person you have to a friend. This probably won't help your relationship with the other magi.
-Miles Fullerlyn. To be a magus is to walk with death. Without proper guidance, your experiments might end up killing you. However, fgavors don't come cheap in the Clock Tower.

You forgot to threadmark these.

I haven't figured out how to threadmark things yet :(

Will fiddle with things when I get on the pc
There's a little button on the bottom of posts in threads you create that says "Threadmark". It's like the ones that say Edit, Delete, Quote, and Reply.

It goes next to the Report button.

Fate/Grimoire
At its best, Clock Tower politics was a winding maze of intrigue and diplomacy. At its worst...

"Apprentice Starman, your recent mishap has caused the severe damage of Association property."

That was a fact you were already aware of. After all, the damaged property was your Workshop. You remain silent as a panel of minor nobles (for you were a lowly foreign magus and not worth the time and effort of the higher families) glared down at you imperiously from their long table.

You still have no idea what kind of Bounded Fields cover your grimoire but one of them seemed to have reacted violently to one of your probing spells. You don't know exactly what happened after you blacked out but everyone seems intent on blaming you.

"We doubt that you have the finances to cover the reparations. However," the speaker's eyes darted to the side where your "mentor" was watching the proceedings carefully, "we are hesitant to claim your Mystic Code as payment."

You knew exactly which Mystic Code they were talking about.

"We have decided to delegate your punishment to Miles Fullerlyn, as is his right as your sponsor." Miles gave a curt nod to the other magus and beckoned for you to follow him. You spared a glance at the magus, who was glaring at your mentor's back.

"How are your studies?" he asked amicably as he led you through the halls.

[]"I have recently begun reasearch into fire element spells. I like to think that my repertoire of offensive spells are fairly decent. (Truth)
[]"It's going fine. [Vague}
[]"I believe that figuring out my affinity would speed up my progress. (ask for help)
[]"..." (Remain silent)

He stares at your face for a moment with such intensity that you fear that he's attempting to hypnotize you.

"To be a magus is to walk with death." he states, seemingly ignoring your reply. "It is not unusual for a magus to cause considerable damage to their Workshop when experimenting."

He runs a hand through his brown hair, his blue eyes never leaving your own.

"Do you know why I stood up for you during your entrance exam?" he asks.

[]"Yes"
[]Shake your head

His unwavering stare is making you feel uncomfortable. The silence stretched for a while before he spoke again.

"They want that book of yours." Your hand grasped at the grimoire in your pocket. "The protections around it..."

He shook his head.

"Never mind. You can't get away without puni8shment, otherwise they will demand "reparation" in some form. And you only have one thing valuable enough to satisfy them. So, I'm giving you a choice."

You wait for his verdict.

"You can join the Enforcers in three missions, with your payment for each mission taken as payment for the damage you caused."

The Enforcers were the closest thing the Clock Tower had to Bounty Hunters and definitely wasn't the place for an eighteen year old apprentice. It would net you some experience in live combat but you doubt that your skill in magecraft is enough to get you out alive.

"Or you can work off your debt as an assistant to one of the noble families."

The emphasis on the word assistant made you think more of "slave" rather than "employee"m especxially considering how haughty some noble families are. It would be the safer option and you'd probably learn a thing or two about noble politics but you'll probably spend months, if not years, being ordered around.

Then again, maybe you can just hand over your grimoire and be done with it?

[]Join the Enforcers
[]Work off the debt
[]Hand over grimoire
