Cast-Offs of Divinity - A Merchants of Divinity Quest

We should gain power through our own efforts and take no contract. Simply do not interact with the namesake of the quest...
historically and pragmatically speaking, that's technically viable but practically doomed to fail.

Contracts offer a wide variety of, effectively, superpowers/magical abilities that would otherwise effectively be impossible for mortals (unless they're one of the 1 in 10 billion people capable of going against the laws of reality. and 99% of those tends to be contracts users anywayb)

Keeping up with a smart (and somewhat lucky) Merchant without using contracts is probably harder than keeping up with a student of the best university in the world while only studying free material in your local library.

Well unlike the original I don't think that that we are likely to get to the point of signing a contract every week with an expanding backlog of unsigned contracts.

For one we don't have a other worldly book that basically includes a godly phonebook. That book was just so amazingly valuable even ignoring how it attracted godly attention.

If we had that book I expect that we would have at least 3 signed contracts already.

Prologue 11-13 - Time Passes Quickly:

[X] Plan: PhD Leviathan, 3 Weeks, No Food
-[X] Declare a course of study (Biology): Gain access to +3/+1 tutoring for a skill for 10 turns. Expected to spend at least 2 TAP per turn on it and take exam at the end. Cost: 1 high dot. (1 AP)
--[X] In the subsequent two weeks, continue the experiment instead.
-[X] Skill training (Course of study) (Science (Biology)) (4 TAP)
-[X] Work: You have a clinic to run now. Pay based on Medicine + Surgery + Pharmacology roll (2 AP)
-[X] Continue Experimenting: Auditory training aid (6/30) (7 AP)
-[X] Duration of plan: 3 Turns (Current maximum of 3)
Looking down at the paperwork you feel an unexpected sense of apprehension. You don't like it. It's not logical.

The source is easy to identify. Parting with such a large sum of money at once. You deliberately delayed to ensure you wouldn't be cutting things closely. But tension still gnaws at your gut. What if you need the money for something? Your debt still hangs overhead.

You squash the thoughts and press submit. You, Leviathan Grimm, will not let this hold you back.

Lose 1 high dot
Gain university attendance for Science (Biology) for the next 10 turns.
You will be required to take a test on turn 21 to prove the value of the universities investment in you.

Training at the University (Advanced): (3+3)d(3+1+1)=6d5 per TAP
12 TAP spent.
72d5 = [1, 2, 4, 5, 4, 1, 1, 1, 3, 4, 2, 3, 2, 2, 1, 2, 1, 5, 3, 3, 5, 4, 1, 5, 1, 4, 5, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 5, 5, 4, 3, 5, 1, 3, 2, 4, 3, 5, 4, 5, 1, 1, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 5, 3, 5, 5, 5, 3, 5, 4, 5, 5, 4, 2, 1, 5, 5, 2, 2, 4] = 225*2 = 450 exp
Science (Biology) now at 4 (180/810)

Your first class starts with a frustrating twenty minutes of reviewing the class syllabus. Surely everyone could review this on their own time? Then the meat of the class starts and you tear in with all the gusto of a starving rat. The professor doesn't pull their punches and teaches at a blistering rate.

While your classmates frantically struggle to take notes you are sure they will have to review later you dig deeper. Homework is completed contemporaneously with the very lectures on the relevant subject. Information acquired synthesized and applied all in a single mental flourish.

Between classes you tear through the textbook and interrogate the teaching assistants for as long as they will let you. You are sure the only reason they don't complain about you monopolizing office hours is because students started showing up just to take notes on the questions you ask. Why ask their own questions when yours are so much better?

Medicine 3 + Surgery 3 + Pharmacology 2= 8 dice
8d6 = [6, 4, 6, 1, 5, 5, 3, 3] = 33
33-18=15
Gain 4.5 decent dots

Medicine 3 + Surgery 3 + Pharmacology 2= 8 dice
8d6 = [4, 5, 5, 6, 1, 6, 5, 2] = 34
34-18=16
Gain 4.6 decent dots

Medicine 3 + Surgery 3 + Pharmacology 2= 8 dice
8d6 = [5, 3, 1, 5, 3, 4, 3, 4] = 28
28-18=10
Gain 4 decent dots

Your work at the clinic picks up to a similarly brisk pace. Patients come and go with every minor malady. The few more serious cases you promptly transfer to a higher level hospital.

If you had to describe it you would liken it to eating a large and filling but bland meal.

In truth you have nothing to complain about. You are being valued. You are doing something you enjoy. It only takes a small proportion of your overall time.

But a mad scientist never grasped success due to their well developed capacity for contentment.

Location: District 12 Commercial Hub. Sub-Level 26, Repurposed Garage:

Your project meanwhile inches closer and closer to completion. First simple experiments with mice. Conditioning them to react to certain sounds. Then repeating the procedure with different sounds and testing how quickly they learn.

You did not seek a single result, but rather to build a methodology. You wanted a device that would work on more then mice. You wanted a process that would work on more then mice. So when you run out of mice you order a batch of finches and repeat your tests. Then a batch of rabbits. Seeking to determine what assumptions you can generalize, and which must be discarded.

How much weight should you give to the psychological data? How much to the behavioral? What signs were important? How can you determine what signs are important quickly.

You compile your data and look it over. Almost. You are so close. Just a few more tests. Just one last trial. You know you almost have it. You just have to be sure. You know it will work.

You will make it work.

Your alarm is ringing. Calling you put down your work for the day.

Do you answer?

[] Push on. Finish the device. Sign the contract.
Deducts 1 AP from next turn to finish the device immediately.

[] No there was something else you wanted to do first
Skips to next turn plan vote.

Auditory training aid: T3 Biology. Cost 9. Benefit: Gain +9 Naturalism (Animal Training). This is reduced to +3 for spontaneous uses. Research progress: (29/30) AP

AN: This is more a narrative choice then a mechanical. I figured that with just a single AP left on the project Leviathan wouldn't be well inclined to stopping. Plus it means you would be able to plan next turn with full knowledge.

Wait, do we have to sign Infinium's contract immediately after finishing the auditory aid? We need to start Bones's marathon before we take Infinium's if we also want to take the other contract.

We went over this a few pages back.

JayTar said:
Ah that is an unintended interaction. I will rule that AP spent to satisfy contract requirements do not disqualify you from drawing MD Old Bones' attention. That is specifically requirements for contracts you have already signed.
Stopping to eat and sleep is allowed by the marathon, and maintaining a signed contract is just as essential to your continued life and health.

MD Old Bones has Opinions and won't ignore you on such a technicality.

SLEEP IS FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T BUSY REVOLUTIONISING THE FIELD OF ANIMAL PSYCHOLOGY!

Actually we don't. Breaks are allowed for any task directly required to survive. This includes contract fulfillment. This was confirmed by QM I believe.

We started with 1 weight. We should get a weight from getting bio 4. Doctor Infinium's contact is worth 2 weight. So just 1 more weight and we hit 5 and our course of study becomes even faster.

We are leaving the prologue in style.

So, with the aid we go Steves contract via mad science = ant/termite training to build it?

That's actually not a bad approach, honestly.

Also true

We might get that 5th weight point from the 30 AP project actually.

Now that I think about it I'm a bit surprised we didn't get one from the neuroplasticity enhancer, our first tier 3 item

Tier three might just not be notable enough. Although we can get that last weight we need to reach 5 from bones contract. And 5 is an important milestone.

Oh, sure, we can get it from the second contract, it's just that THAT will take us another 2 weeks, so 2 more weeks of no improved training.

We'll also need to make sure we have enough money put aside to survive WITHOUT working (to actually do the marathon in only 2 turns), but that's secondary.

Mh... @JayTar at which rank we outgrow university courses? Gen 5 spec 6? Higher?

I'm pretty sure after biology we'll do science. If we focus like we are right now we can probably complete both in less than 10 weeks each.

Mh... Maybe we'll spend a few APs on something different BEFORE going science 5? We could get a few points in combat, just as a safety measure, and make a weapon for us to add to that.

To keep to biology, how about retractable claws, wolverine-style? Alternatively there's poison, fire breath (dragon-style), or maybe a bioelectric shock?
